The 8th round of Serie A kicks off at the San Siro Stadium in Milan with a classic top-vs-bottom clash between AC Milan and Pisa, currently first and last in the Italian league standings. The Rossoneri, after a disappointing previous season, have clearly turned the page and reclaimed the top spot last weekend by beating Fiorentina 2-1 in a comeback victory, thanks to a brace from Leao. That win, combined with Roma’s defeat against Inter and Napoli’s loss to Torino, allowed Massimiliano Allegri’s side to enter this round as league leaders, although with just a one-point advantage over their three closest chasers — Inter, Napoli, and Roma. Since the Serie A weekend also features the big match between Napoli and Inter, the Rossoneri would have a golden chance to extend their lead over at least one of their direct rivals if they beat Pisa. The mood is completely different for the Tuscan side, coming off a disappointing goalless home draw against Verona and still searching for their first league win. Newly promoted Pisa, fully aware of the difficulty of this match, will still aim to give their all at San Siro and try to grab at least one point to move up from last place, which they currently share with Fiorentina and Genoa.
AC Milan are enjoying an excellent run of form, sitting at the top of the Serie A table after seven rounds. The Rossoneri are unbeaten in seven matches across all competitions, having collected 16 league points with 5 wins, 1 draw, and 1 defeat, averaging 1.57 goals scored and only 0.57 conceded per match.
The main strength of Allegri’s side, himself a native of Livorno and well aware of the Pisa rivalry, lies undoubtedly in their defense. Milan boast the second-best defensive record in Serie A, having found remarkable solidity since switching to a three-man backline after years with a four-man defense.
In attack, the Rossoneri have been efficient and dangerous both on set pieces — thanks to strong aerial players like Gabbia and Pavlovic — and on the counterattack, where Leao has rediscovered his scoring touch after recent criticism. In the build-up phase, everything goes through Luka Modric, who, despite being 40 years old, continues to display timeless class and vision.
At home, Milan have played six matches so far this season, recording five wins and one loss. They come into this fixture on a streak of four consecutive home victories in all competitions, with an average of 2 goals scored and just 0.5 conceded per game.
Pisa are still winless this season, coming off eight matches without a victory in all competitions. Unsurprisingly, they sit bottom of the Serie A table with just 3 points, the result of 3 draws and 4 defeats, averaging only 0.43 goals scored and 1.43 conceded per match. A loss in Milan would make their situation even more complicated.
The main weakness of Alberto Gilardino’s side — himself a former Milan player — is clearly the attack, which ranks as the second-worst in Serie A with just 3 goals in 7 matches. Including Coppa Italia fixtures, the Tuscans haven’t scored in four consecutive games, showing not only finishing struggles but also a lack of creativity in generating scoring chances.
Aside from the four goals conceded against Bologna on October 5, largely due to an early red card for Touré, Pisa’s defense has been fairly organized despite some obvious technical limitations. Gilardino hopes that veteran defender Albiol, likely to start against Milan, can bring the necessary experience to stabilize the backline.
The Nerazzurri come into this match having lost three straight away games across Serie A and Coppa Italia, scoring only twice (both against Napoli) and conceding eight goals. Those numbers do not bode well ahead of their trip to face the Serie A leaders.
Based on all the above, the BetMines prediction leans heavily toward a convincing home win for AC Milan, who will be motivated to take full advantage of this favorable fixture to extend their lead and strengthen their grip on first place.
Milan’s win probability is estimated at 64%, while Pisa have just a 14% chance of leaving San Siro with all three points.
Given the offensive struggles Pisa have shown so far, BetMines suggests that Milan could keep another clean sheet — as they have in five of their last seven matches — with the “Both Teams to Score – No” outcome rated at 55% probability.
Moreover, there’s a good chance that Milan will win without scoring more than two goals, making the Under 2.5 goals option the most likely. Allegri will still have to deal with the injuries of Rabiot, Loftus-Cheek, and Pulisic — the latter being the team’s current top scorer. Also worth monitoring are the conditions of Nkunku, who missed the match against Fiorentina due to a minor injury.
AC MILAN (3-5-2): Maignan; De Winter, Gabbia, Pavlovic; Saelemaekers, Fofana, Modric, Ricci, Bartesaghi; Gimenez, Leao. Coach: Allegri
PISA (3-5-2): Semper; Caracciolo, Albiol, Canestrelli; Touré, Akinsanmiro, Marin, Aebischer, Leris; Tramoni, Nzola. Coach: Gilardino
