After months of anticipation, the new FIFA Club World Cup—expanded for the first time to 32 teams—finally kicks off. The opening match will take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, featuring Inter Miami vs Al Ahly, who share Group A with Porto and Palmeiras. The Egyptian side Al Ahly, coached by Spaniard José Riveiro, comes into this competition with a rich and decorated history: they are the most successful club in Egyptian football, with 45 league titles (the latest clinched just days ago) and 12 CAF Champions League victories. Their win in the most recent continental edition—their third in a row—earned them a spot in this inaugural version of the Club World Cup. Counting previous formats, this marks their 11th participation in the tournament. Despite their international pedigree, progressing beyond the group stage won’t be easy, as they face stronger and more star-studded opponents. For Inter Miami, this marks their first-ever appearance in the competition. Their qualification came via winning the 2024 MLS Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular season record in Major League Soccer. Despite their lack of international experience, Javier Mascherano’s squad is filled with players who have excelled at the highest levels—many of them during their time at FC Barcelona. Beyond club talisman Lionel Messi, the roster also features Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba (currently sidelined with an injury). The excitement for this opening clash is sky-high, not just for the star names on show but also for the contrast between the two teams: Al Ahly brings legacy and structure, while Inter Miami represents ambition and star power in a newer project.
On May 28, Al Ahly claimed their 45th Egyptian Premier League title after a crushing 6–0 win over Pharco, with Abou Ali netting four goals in a standout performance. This marked their sixth consecutive victory under coach José Riveiro.
What stands out is their attacking firepower: over their last five matches, the Egyptians have averaged an impressive 3.6 goals per game. Their defense has also been solid, conceding just 0.6 goals per match in the same stretch.
Inter Miami also comes into this match off the back of a statement 5–1 win over Columbus Crew, with Lionel Messi scoring a brace and Luis Suárez also getting on the scoresheet. This was their second straight victory, following a win over Montreal, pushing them to third place in the MLS Eastern Conference, five points behind the leaders.
Under Mascherano, Inter Miami boasts one of the strongest attacks in MLS, frequently driven by the prolific duo of Messi and Suárez. However, defensive issues persist—in their last five matches, they’ve conceded an average of 2.4 goals per game, though they’ve managed to score 3 per match in return.
This is a historic first encounter between the two clubs. Inter Miami has never faced an African team, while Al Ahly has played against one American side—beating Seattle Sounders 1–0 in the 2022 Club World Cup quarterfinals.
Given the group stage format, this is arguably the most winnable fixture for both teams before they face Porto and Palmeiras. Expect an open, attacking match, as a draw may not be enough to secure progression from such a competitive group.
Al Ahly’s team structure and tournament experience contrast with Inter Miami’s star-laden lineup. However, Miami’s individual talent—with Messi, Suárez, and Busquets, all legends from their Barcelona days—could prove decisive.
For these reasons, our Al Ahly vs Inter Miami prediction leans toward the visitors avoiding defeat, especially with home support at the Hard Rock Stadium.
AL AHLY (4-3-2-1): El Shenawy; Hany, Rabia, Ibrahim, Debes; El Solia, Ashour, Ateya; Mohamed, Trezeguet; Abou Ali. Coach: José Riveiro
