At the Emirates Stadium in London on Saturday, August 23, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal hosts Daniel Farke's Leeds in the final fixture of Premier League Matchday 2. The Gunners, after two seasons spent in the shadow of Manchester City and Liverpool, have big ambitions and aim to bring back a trophy that has eluded them for too long. Arteta’s side started the season on the right foot, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the opening big match. Three important points, although the performance was not entirely convincing: the Red Devils probably deserved at least a draw. At this stage of the season, however, the priority is to accumulate points while fine-tuning the team’s playing style. That’s why the match against newly promoted Leeds is an important opportunity to secure a second consecutive win and stay in touch with direct competitors. Daniel Farke’s team, champions of last season’s Championship, started their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 home win over Everton, a result that gives confidence as they aim for their minimum seasonal objective: avoiding relegation. The task at the Emirates, however, looks extremely difficult. Leeds have lost or drawn 13 of their last 14 away league matches, and taking points in London will require a real feat. Arsenal, on the other hand, have lost only 2 of their last 27 Premier League matches and cannot afford any slip-ups in front of their home fans, in a season Arteta and his team want to live as protagonists both domestically and in Europe.
Last weekend, Arsenal secured the first big match of their season, beating Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford. Riccardo Calafiori’s decisive header gave the Gunners the lead. After the goal, however, Arteta’s side created few chances, focusing mainly on containing the Red Devils’ attacks. Unsurprisingly, goalkeeper David Raya was the man of the match, making at least two crucial saves that preserved the result.
Ahead of the Leeds clash, Arteta still faces familiar attacking issues: Gabriel Jesus remains unavailable due to a long-term injury, while Kai Havertz is sidelined with a knee problem. Calafiori, Manchester match-winner, will compete for a starting spot with Lewis-Skelly, while Gyökeres and Saka seem certain to retain their positions in the attacking trio. The last forward spot is a toss-up between Martinelli and Madueke.
The 2024/25 Championship winners made the perfect Premier League debut, defeating an experienced Everton side 1-0. The Peacocks dominated the match, creating numerous chances, particularly through Wilfried Gnonto, a constant threat to the opposition defense. Despite the many opportunities, the score was only opened in the final minutes with a penalty converted by Lucas Nmecha.
Having celebrated their seventh consecutive win across the Championship and Premier League, Leeds are already focused on the Arsenal clash. Daniel Farke, with his full squad available, is expected to stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation used in their debut: Joel Piroe, who scored 19 goals last season, will lead the attack, supported by Japanese midfielder Tanaka and wingers Gnonto and Daniel James. In defense, former Udinese player Jaka Bijol could make his first appearance since serving a suspension.
Arsenal start as favorites in the league clash against Leeds, a team capable of creating some threats but likely to suffer their first defeat of the season.
The Gunners entered the Premier League with a declared goal of fighting for the title until the end. After their hard-fought win over Manchester United, Arteta and his players cannot afford to drop points against a newly promoted team: it is reasonable to expect an aggressive start, aiming to score early and try to secure the result in the second half.
Leeds, coming off a strong debut against Everton, have not won at Arsenal for over twenty years and will find it difficult to withstand a team that finished second in the league in consecutive seasons. It is therefore unsurprising that the BetMines algorithm clearly favors the Londoners, predicting a convincing win that could come with more than a one-goal margin.
