Matchday 36 of Serie A wraps up with a thrilling Monday Night clash at the Gewiss Stadium between Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta and Claudio Ranieri's Roma. This is a true head-to-head battle for a spot in next season’s Champions League, as the third and sixth teams in the league face off, separated by just five points. The home side comes into this game on a four-match unbeaten run, and after a convincing 0-4 win away against relegated Monza, Atalanta has currently secured third place behind Napoli and Inter. Since exiting both the Champions League and the title race, Gasperini’s men have made it their goal to finish the season with yet another qualification for Europe’s elite competition. The standings clearly favor Atalanta, and even if they don’t seal their spot this round, they still have two manageable fixtures left: against Genoa, who have nothing to play for, and Parma on the final day, who may already be safe. Among the teams fighting for a top-four finish is also Claudio Ranieri’s Roma, who could cap off a remarkable comeback by securing a place in the Champions League. The Giallorossi have not lost a single match since December, steadily climbing up the table. With three games remaining, they are just outside the top four and a victory in Bergamo would keep their hopes alive going into the final two matchdays, where they’ll face AC Milan and Torino—two sides with nothing left to fight for. A win at the Gewiss Stadium could prove decisive for Roma, who are dreaming of a return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2018/19 season.
On Matchday 35, Atalanta crushed Monza 4-0 away, with a brace from De Ketelaere and goals from Lookman and Brescianini. This was their fourth straight positive result, following 1-0 wins over AC Milan and Bologna, and a 1-1 home draw with Lecce.
With these three points, Gasperini’s side moved up to 68 points, holding a solid lead over fifth place. However, their home form in 2025 has been underwhelming: only one home league win this year (2-0 vs Bologna on April 13), along with five draws and three defeats. Atalanta boast the second-best attack in Serie A with 71 goals scored and also the second-best defense with 31 goals conceded in 34 matches.
By beating Fiorentina 1-0, Roma extended their unbeaten run to 19 league matches. A moment of brilliance from Dovbyk late in the first half and several crucial saves by Svilar sealed the win. Over their last five games, Roma have recorded three wins and two draws, averaging 1 goal scored and 0.4 goals conceded per match.
Ranieri’s squad has one of the best defenses in the league with just 32 goals conceded in 35 games. However, offensively, they haven’t scored more than one goal in any of their last nine matches across all competitions. Away from the Stadio Olimpico, Roma are coming off a strong 1-0 win at Inter, preceded by a draw at Lazio and another 1-0 win at Lecce. On the road, the Giallorossi average 0.94 goals scored and 1.06 goals conceded per game.
Both Atalanta and Roma enter this match with a shared goal: winning to secure a Champions League spot. The last five meetings between these two sides in Bergamo favor Atalanta, who have won four and lost just once (in the 2021/22 season). In the reverse fixture played in December, La Dea won 0-2 at the Stadio Olimpico with goals from De Roon and Zaniolo.
Gasperini will have to cope with a defensive crisis due to Kolasinac’s injury and Hien’s suspension. These absences could open the door for Roma to score, especially considering the current form of Dovbyk and Soulé.
Atalanta, on the other hand, are more than capable of scoring themselves, boasting the second-best attack in the league and coming off a four-goal haul at Monza. In fact, the few times they failed to score at home recently were against lower-tier teams like Venezia and Cagliari.
One key positive for Gasperini is the return to scoring form of De Ketelaere, who will be vital in this final stretch of the season.
For all these reasons, the Atalanta vs Roma prediction from the BetMines algorithm expects a match with goals from both sides.
