After the international break, the Bundesliga returns with the Friday night clash between Bayer Leverkusen and Bochum. At the BayArena, Xabi Alonso’s side and Dieter Hecking’s team will battle for crucial points in their respective season objectives: chasing first place and securing safety. Leverkusen, after being eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich, bounced back with determination in the Bundesliga, securing a crucial victory on Stuttgart’s tough pitch. Those three points allowed the reigning German champions, still competing in the DFB Pokal, to move within six points of the top spot. With 12 Bundesliga matches left and Bayern Munich potentially distracted by their European campaign, Xabi Alonso aims to close the gap further and attempt an overtake that would grant Leverkusen the Meisterschale for the second consecutive season. The first step in reclaiming the title is to defeat Bochum, currently third-bottom, trailing the safety zone by five points. For Hecking's side, the final stretch of the season presents a double challenge: trying to climb to the fourth-last position (currently held by St. Pauli) or at least securing their current third-last place, which would grant them a playoff against the third-place finisher from 2. Bundesliga for a spot in the top flight.
In their last Bundesliga match, Bayer Leverkusen showcased great resilience and strength, completing a comeback from 3-1 to 3-4 against Stuttgart, with a decisive stoppage-time goal from Schick.
This victory ended a streak of three consecutive losses across the Bundesliga and Champions League. However, before that losing run, Leverkusen had put together an eight-game unbeaten streak (four wins, four draws).
At home, in their last five Bundesliga matches, Leverkusen have secured three wins, one draw, and one defeat. Overall, at the BayArena this season, they have recorded eight wins, three draws, and two losses, scoring 29 goals (2.23 per match) and conceding 17.
Before the international break, Bochum suffered a 3-1 home defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt, a team competing for a Champions League spot. This heavy loss worsened their situation, increasing the gap from safety while reducing their lead over the second-bottom side.
However, before this setback, Bochum pulled off a shocking 2-3 away victory against Bayern Munich. While this result might provide some confidence ahead of their trip to Leverkusen, it remains just their second away win of the season.
So far, Bochum have collected only eight points away from home (two wins, two draws, nine losses) out of their total of 20 points, with an average of 1.07 goals scored per game and 2.30 conceded.
The last five head-to-head encounters between these two teams have resulted in three wins for Bayer Leverkusen, one for Bochum, and one draw (the 1-1 tie in the reverse fixture, with goals from Schick and Miyoshi). Additionally, Leverkusen have won their last three home matches against Bochum, scoring seven goals and conceding none.
Regarding the prediction, the hosts are the clear favorites, although they will have to cope without Florian Wirtz, who is sidelined due to injury. This means that the attacking responsibility will fall on Patrick Schick, who has already scored 24 goals this season.
The only factor that could work in Bochum's favor is potential fatigue among Leverkusen's key players who were on international duty over the past two weeks. Nevertheless, the BetMines algorithm prediction for Bayer Leverkusen vs Bochum strongly favors the home team.
Bayer Leverkusen (3-1-4-2): Hradecky; Mukiele, Tah, Hincapié; Andrich; Frimpong, Xhaka, Garcia, Grimaldo; Adli, Schick. Coach: Xabi Alonso
Bochum (3-5-2): Horn; Oermann, Ordets, Bernardo; Passlack, Bero, Sissoko, Krauss, Wittek; Masouras, Hofmann. Coach: Dieter Hecking
