Championship 2025/26 kicks off with an intriguing clash between two teams that, just a few months ago, were competing in League One and the Premier League respectively: Birmingham City and Ipswich Town. The hosts lived up to expectations last season by bouncing straight back to the Championship after being relegated in the 2024/25 campaign. Not only did Birmingham City secure promotion, they absolutely dominated League One, finishing with a remarkable 111 points – 19 more than runners-up Wrexham. As the scoreline suggests, Chris Davies' side was a near-perfect machine in both attack and defense, powered by the goals of Jay Stansfield, fresh off a European Championship win with England U21. As a newly promoted side, their goal this season is a comfortable survival while laying the groundwork for a Premier League return – something they haven’t achieved in 15 years. To improve their chances of staying up, the club has significantly revamped the squad, targeting players with the quality to make a difference in the Championship. One standout signing is Japanese striker Kyogo Furuhashi, who joined from Lens for €8 million. For Ipswich Town, the mood is quite different after finishing 19th in the Premier League in 2024/25. The Tractor Boys are aiming to fight their way back to the top flight, but the Championship is a long, demanding competition that requires focus and endurance. After selling rising star Liam Delap to Chelsea for a staggering €35 million – Ipswich’s top scorer last season – the club has opted to invest in experience to boost their promotion hopes. One of the most talked-about arrivals is Ashley Young, the veteran full-back who joined on a free transfer after spells with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Everton. Another key signing is Azor Matusiwa, a physical and experienced midfielder acquired from Lens for just over €11 million.
Birmingham City had a relatively positive pre-season, securing solid wins against higher-level opponents – most notably a 3-1 win over Sevilla on July 12 and a 1-0 victory against Nottingham Forest, who had a strong Premier League campaign last season. That said, there were also slip-ups, including heavy defeats to Northampton (3-0) and Crewe (4-0).
The League One 2024/25 champions made the most of their offensive potential, averaging 1.8 goals per game in the league. Defensively, they were just as impressive, conceding only 0.7 goals per match and keeping 22 clean sheets in 46 matches. Jay Stansfield was their top scorer with 23 goals (19 in the league), and his continued presence up front is a strong starting point for a successful Championship campaign.
Following their relegation from the Premier League, Ipswich Town had an excellent pre-season, winning all four friendlies against BW Linz, Aberdeen, Charlton, and Auxerre. Their 3-0 win over Auxerre on August 2 – with goals from Hirst, Greaves, and Al Hamadi – was especially convincing.
Across those matches, Martyn Pert’s men scored 12 goals and conceded only 3, showing promising offensive form and defensive solidity. However, last season's Premier League numbers tell a different story: Ipswich averaged just 0.9 goals scored and 2.2 conceded per game – figures that must be improved to challenge for promotion. Despite the struggles, Liam Delap still managed to shine with 12 goals before making his big-money move to Chelsea.
The Birmingham City vs Ipswich Town prediction from BetMines clearly leans towards a home win, not only due to the home advantage but also based on last season’s performances.
Birmingham have been nearly unbeatable at home, losing just one of their last 20 matches at St Andrew’s and winning 9 of their last 10 there. More impressively, they’ve remained unbeaten in 33 of their last 35 matches across all venues. It’s hard to imagine them slipping up in their Championship return.
Ipswich, despite relegation, actually collected more points away than at home last season, finishing with 3 wins, 6 draws, and 10 defeats on the road. They remain a dangerous away team, thanks to fast wingers like Ogbene and Clarke.
Given Ipswich’s tendency to perform better away from home – and their counter-attacking style – this match could be lively, with goals and end-to-end action. While the home side are 64% favorites, their pre-season defensive record raises some questions, and the adjustment to a higher division could expose some cracks.
