At the Estadio Municipal de El Alto, Bolivia and Brazil play the final chapter of the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers leading up to next year’s tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. With the last ninety minutes left to play, the situation of the two teams is completely opposite: Bolivia must win to try and secure a spot in the playoffs, while Brazil have long since booked their ticket to the next World Cup, currently sitting in second place. Bolivia knows they will have to give everything in this last game, but their destiny is not entirely in their own hands. In addition to beating the Seleção, which is certainly no easy task, Oscar Villegas’ men must also hope that Venezuela, currently seventh in the standings with one point more, fail to beat Colombia. On the other hand, Brazil has no intention of ending this long and grueling qualification campaign with a defeat. Given the circumstances, the feeling is that both teams will approach this match with high intensity, making it a clash worth watching.
Bolivia comes into this game after a heavy 3-0 defeat against Colombia on September 5, failing to build on the 2-0 victory against Chile earlier in June. Their record over the last five matches is not encouraging: one win, three defeats, and one draw, with an average of 0.6 goals scored and 1.6 conceded per game.
La Verde currently sits in eighth place in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers with 17 points, the result of 5 wins, 2 draws, and 10 defeats. Just one point behind seventh-placed Venezuela, they can still hope to reach the playoffs, but they must beat Brazil and rely on Venezuela slipping against Colombia.
Recent home performances have been positive: in their last four home matches, Bolivia beat Chile and Colombia, and drew against Paraguay and Uruguay. At home, defense often makes the difference, with three of those four matches ending with a clean sheet.
Brazil is in good form, having won their last two group games against Paraguay and Chile by 1-0 and 3-0 respectively. Their last five outings show a positive record: three wins, one draw, and one loss, averaging 1.4 goals scored and 1 conceded per game. The defense has been particularly solid, not conceding in the last three matches.
The Seleção, with ninety minutes left in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers, sit second in the standings behind Argentina. Brazil has collected 28 points so far, from 8 wins, 4 draws, and 5 defeats, scoring 24 goals and conceding 16.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side, however, struggles away from home: in their last three away fixtures they failed to win, drawing against Ecuador and Venezuela, and suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat in the Superclásico against Argentina. Their last away victory dates back almost a year ago, when they beat Chile 2-1.
The BetMines prediction foresees a very tight and intense game, with a strong probability of fewer than three goals being scored. Bolivia has been solid at home in recent games, while Brazil’s defense under Ancelotti seems to have rediscovered its best form.
Adding to this, Ancelotti may rotate his starting lineup, giving opportunities to second-choice players, especially in attacking positions. This suggests that Brazil may not necessarily try to dominate possession, instead waiting to hit Bolivia on the counter.
Bolivia, on the other hand, will be forced to attack Alisson’s goal, but they risk running into the solid Brazilian backline led by Marquinhos, captain of Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. For this reason, in addition to predicting an Under 2.5 goals outcome, the BetMines algorithm sees Brazil as favorites to win with a 44% chance. The feeling is that the Seleção could secure a 0-1 or 0-2 victory.
