With one matchday remaining, the Bundesliga is heating up in the race for the final two Champions League spots. While Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen have long secured their place in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, three teams—Eintracht Frankfurt, SC Freiburg, and Borussia Dortmund—are battling it out for third and fourth place in the final 90 minutes. Heading into the last round, they sit at 57, 55, and 54 points respectively. Fate has orchestrated a thrilling direct clash between Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg, while Borussia Dortmund face a theoretically easier fixture at home against already relegated Holstein Kiel. On Saturday, May 17, at Signal Iduna Park, Niko Kovac’s side have one clear objective: win and wait for a favorable result from Freiburg. The Black and Yellows are finishing the season strongly, with four straight wins that have amplified the regret over a campaign that could have delivered much more. With 90 minutes left, Dortmund’s last chance to salvage their season is by qualifying for next year’s Champions League, a competition they reached the final of just last year against Real Madrid. Holstein Kiel, already condemned to Bundesliga 2, arrive in Dortmund with their focus likely on next season and a quick return to the top flight. Despite their fate, Marcel Repp’s squad have been putting up respectable performances, earning two wins and a draw in their last four matches. However, motivation will lie entirely with Dortmund, who must win to avoid throwing away their entire season.
Borussia Dortmund are ending the Bundesliga campaign in excellent form, with six wins and one draw in their last seven matches. In the previous round, they secured an impressive 4-2 away win over Bayer Leverkusen, with goals from Brandt, Ryerson, Adeyemi, and Guirassy.
Their attack is firing on all cylinders, scoring 20 goals in the last six league games. With 54 points from 16 wins, 6 draws, and 11 losses, Dortmund currently boast the third-best attack in the Bundesliga with 61 goals (2.06 per match). However, they also have the worst defense among the top six, having conceded 51. At home, they’ve lost only once in their last eight matches and have won the last four in a row.
Kiel, already relegated, lost 2-1 to Freiburg last Saturday, following a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig and back-to-back wins against Borussia Mönchengladbach (4-3) and FC Augsburg (3-1). Repp’s men have shown strong attacking intent, averaging 2 goals scored over the last five games, but have been defensively leaky, conceding 1.8 goals per match in the same span.
Nicknamed The Storks, Kiel have the worst defense in the Bundesliga, with 77 goals conceded—a worrying 2.33 per game. Their away form has been dreadful overall, with only 2 wins and 5 draws (9 losses), totaling just 11 of their 25 points. That said, they've gone three away games unbeaten (two draws, one win) and have scored in every away game since last November.
These two teams have met only three times in history, and all matches have been high-scoring affairs. The most recent was earlier this season on January 14, when Kiel surprisingly beat Dortmund 4-2 at home. In the previous meetings (2012 and 2021), Dortmund dominated with 4-0 and 5-0 victories.
Dortmund’s attack is currently clicking, with Guirassy in top form—now on 20 league goals, just five behind Harry Kane. With Champions League qualification still on the line, expect Kovac’s side to come out aggressive from the first whistle.
Given Kiel’s defensive weaknesses, Dortmund could repeat recent big wins like those against Leverkusen and Wolfsburg. However, Kiel’s solid scoring record on the road suggests they could also get on the scoresheet. Watch out for Machino, Kiel’s top scorer with 11 goals.
For these reasons, the Borussia Dortmund vs Kiel prediction for the 34th Bundesliga matchday, drawn up by the BetMines algorithm, predicts an exciting match in which three or more goals in total will be scored.
