The Stade Michel d'Ornano sets the stage for the final clash of Ligue 2's Matchday 22 between home side Caen and visitors Dunkerque. Both teams are in desperate need of points to chase their respective seasonal objectives: survival and promotion to Ligue 1. Caen, owned by Kylian Mbappé, is currently bottom of the table, trailing eight points behind the third-to-last spot, which grants access to the relegation playoff. For Bruno Baltazar’s team—who replaced Nicolas Seube at the beginning of 2025—this home match against Dunkerque represents the classic last chance, despite its difficulty. Dunkerque, on the other hand, is pushing for the positions that guarantee either direct promotion or a playoff spot for Ligue 1. Castro’s side is only two points away from third place and seven points behind second place, which grants automatic promotion. This trip to Caen is therefore a must-win to keep their historic Ligue 1 promotion dream alive.
Caen's numbers in Ligue 2 so far are dreadful, and unless a sudden turnaround occurs, relegation seems inevitable. Mbappé’s club, recently under fire from fans, comes into this game on the back of seven consecutive defeats, conceding 14 goals and scoring only 3.
Their last league victory dates back to November 2nd (a 2-0 win over Bastia). Caen has the third-worst attack in Ligue 2, with only 21 goals scored, and the third-worst defense, having conceded 32 goals. In their last league match, they suffered a 3-0 defeat away at Troyes.
Despite sitting fourth in the table, Dunkerque is not in great form, having managed just one win, two draws, and two losses in their last five Ligue 2 matches. However, Castro’s squad gained a major confidence boost this week after advancing in the French Cup by defeating Lille in a penalty shootout. The decisive penalty was scored by their 19-year-old goalkeeper, Ewen Jaouen.
One positive factor ahead of their trip to Caen is their six-game unbeaten streak in away matches across all competitions. In away games, Dunkerque averages 1.3 goals scored per match versus 1.5 conceded. Their overall away record stands at 3 wins, 3 draws, and 4 losses.
Caen understands the importance of this game and will do everything possible to break their seven-match losing streak. For Dunkerque, this is also a must-win match to stay in the promotion race.
As a result, the game could be a low-scoring and cagey affair, quite different from the 3-1 victory Dunkerque secured in the reverse fixture. Additionally, Dunkerque may suffer from some fatigue following their cup exploits against Lille.
For these reasons, the BetMines algorithm predicts an Under 3.5 goals outcome for Caen vs Dunkerque in Ligue 2.
Caen (4-2-3-1): Mandréa; Sy, Moussounda, Traoré, Gaudin; Lebreton, Debohi; Brahimi, Le Bihan, Najim; Mendy. Coach: Balthazar.
