The 23rd round of Serie A concludes at the Unipol Domus with the Monday night clash between Davide Nicola’s Cagliari and Marco Baroni’s Lazio. The hosts, coming off a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Torino, are in desperate need of points to extend their gap from the relegation zone and boost their chances of survival. The match in Turin was a harsh setback for Nicola's side, especially after their convincing 4-1 victory over Lecce just a week earlier in a crucial relegation battle. Once again, Cagliari's attacking struggles were evident against Torino. The team has been suffering from the lack of a prolific striker and the absence of Luvumbo due to injury. Notably, Luvumbo was the one who scored in the reverse fixture at the Stadio Olimpico. Lazio, on the other hand, are also seeking redemption after suffering two consecutive defeats. While their recent 2-1 loss to Fiorentina in Matchday 22 was particularly damaging, their Europa League defeat to Braga was inconsequential, as they had already secured a spot in the Round of 16. The loss to Fiorentina, however, allowed their rivals to close the gap in the standings. Many critics pointed out Lazio’s overly aggressive approach against teams of similar caliber, something that was also evident in their derby loss against Roma a few weeks ago.

Cagliari's shape and key statistics

Cagliari’s defeat at Torino ended a solid three-game unbeaten streak, during which they secured two wins (against Lecce and Monza) and a draw at San Siro against AC Milan. In their last five Serie A matches, the Sardinian side has averaged 1.4 goals per game while conceding 1.6.

One of the bright spots for Cagliari has been goalkeeper Elia Caprile. The January signing, brought in to replace Scuffet, has already made crucial saves to keep his team in games.

At home, Cagliari’s record stands at three wins, three draws, and five losses, with an average of 1.09 goals scored and 1.72 conceded per match. In their last five home games, they have secured victories over Lecce and Hellas Verona, scoring eight goals and conceding eight.

Lazio's shape and key statistics

Lazio’s recent form has been inconsistent, with just one win in their last five Serie A matches, along with two draws and two damaging losses to Roma and Fiorentina. Despite this, the Biancocelesti remain in contention for a European spot.

For this match, Marco Baroni welcomes back Nicolò Rovella, who was suspended against Fiorentina. However, the team will still miss Nuno Tavares, who has been a key player with his crosses from the left flank.

Defensive concerns remain a major issue for Lazio. With 30 goals conceded, they have the worst defensive record among the top ten teams in Serie A. However, they compensate with one of the best attacking lines, having scored 38 goals (an average of 1.72 per match). In their last five away matches, Lazio has won three and lost two, scoring seven goals and conceding four.

Cagliari vs Lazio Prediction and Tactical Overview

The first meeting between these two sides this season was an intense contest, with Lazio securing a 2-1 win thanks to a penalty converted by Mattia Zaccagni. The match was also marked by high tension, as Castellanos and Mina clashed, leading to the Colombian defender’s red card.

Cagliari has recently switched to a more offensive 4-2-3-1 formation, aiming to exploit the wide areas to create goal-scoring opportunities. Expect them to target aerial duels, with Piccoli as a reference point in attack and support from Zortea and Felici’s runs into the box.

Lazio might face some fatigue following their Europa League commitments, although Baroni attempted to rotate his squad by resting key players such as Dia, Zaccagni, and Isaksen.
