The UEFA Champions League returns to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea host Ajax on matchday three of the league phase. The London side currently sit in 18th place, while the Dutch giants occupy 35th position. Both teams are eager to make a statement, but their recent form and confidence levels could not be more different. Chelsea are back in Europe’s top competition for the first time since 2022–23, and after a strong start to the season, they will look to consolidate their position with another home victory. Ajax, on the other hand, are struggling to find rhythm and consistency, having lost both of their opening fixtures in this campaign.

Chelsea’s Recent Form and Key Stats

Chelsea enter this clash in excellent form, riding a wave of confidence after a convincing 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. That result marked their third consecutive victory across all competitions, following a 1-0 home success against Benfica in the Champions League and a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich earlier in the group stage. The Blues have now won four of their last five matches, scoring an average of 1.8 goals per game while conceding just one on average.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have been particularly dominant, winning at half time in their last four home fixtures and maintaining a strong record in European competition. They have scored at least one goal in 20 of their last 21 matches and have gone 26 of their last 28 games without a draw, underlining their attacking intent and decisive approach. In the Champions League, they have found the net in each of their last 34 matches, a testament to their consistency on the continental stage.

However, injuries have hit the squad hard. Key players such as Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández, Raheem Sterling, Benoît Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Dario Essugo, Liam Delap, and Gabriel Slonina are all unavailable. Additionally, João Pedro is suspended following his red card against Benfica. Despite these absences, manager Mauricio Pochettino has options to rotate, with young talent Estevão expected to start in midfield after an impressive cameo against Nottingham Forest. Pedro Neto will lead the attack, seeking his first Champions League goal for the club.

Ajax’s Recent Form and Key Stats

Ajax arrive in London under pressure after a poor run of results. The Dutch side have lost both of their Champions League fixtures so far, including a heavy 4-0 defeat to Marseille and a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich. Their domestic form has also been inconsistent, with just one win in their last six matches across all competitions. Their most recent outing ended in a 2-0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie, leaving them short on confidence ahead of this trip.

Offensively, Ajax have struggled to find the back of the net in Europe, going two Champions League matches without scoring. Their attack has relied heavily on veteran striker Wout Weghorst, who has five goals and one assist in nine appearances this season, but he has yet to make an impact in this competition. Injuries have also disrupted their rhythm, with Kasper Dolberg, Steven Berghuis, Don-Angelo Konadu, and Branco van den Boomen all sidelined.

Despite their struggles, Ajax remain a side capable of producing attacking football. They have seen over 0.5 goals in each of their last 40 matches and over 1.5 goals in their last 21. However, their defensive frailties have been exposed, conceding an average of 2.4 goals per game in their last five outings. Away from home, they have also been vulnerable, though their matches tend to be open, with over 1.5 goals scored in each of their last ten away fixtures.

Chelsea vs Ajax Prediction and Tactical Overview

This fixture brings together two clubs with rich European histories but contrasting current trajectories. Chelsea are in strong form, with their pressing and quick transitions proving effective under Pochettino. Their ability to dominate possession and create chances, especially at home, should give them the upper hand. The Blues’ defense, marshaled by Thiago Silva and Reece James, has looked solid, keeping clean sheets in their last two matches.

Ajax, meanwhile, are still searching for balance under John Heitinga. Their defensive structure has been leaky, and their inability to convert chances has cost them dearly. The Dutch side will likely adopt a cautious approach, hoping to exploit counterattacking opportunities through Weghorst and the pace of their wingers. However, given their recent struggles in front of goal and Chelsea’s strong home record, it will be a difficult task to take points away from Stamford Bridge.

Historically, these sides have met twice in the Champions League, with Chelsea unbeaten (one win, one draw). Their last encounter, a thrilling 4-4 draw in 2019, remains one of the competition’s most memorable games, but this time the circumstances are very different. Chelsea’s current momentum and Ajax’s lack of confidence suggest a more controlled and one-sided affair.
