Prediction published on Aug 25, 2025 3:33 PM by Dario in Europe - Champions League | Modified on Aug 26, 2025 4:00 PM
On Wednesday, August 27, at the Jan Breydel Stadium, Club Brugge hosts Rangers in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League playoff round. The Belgian runners-up start with the advantage in the prediction, having won the first leg 3-1 at Ibrox Stadium. This means the Scots are now forced to win by at least three goals to qualify directly for Europe’s top competition. Based on what was seen in Scotland, this looks like a very difficult task. In front of their home fans, Russell Martin’s men went into halftime already three goals down, with Vermant, Spileers, and Mechele all scoring before Danilo Pereira reduced the gap to 3-1. Club Brugge, who eliminated another strong side in Red Bull Salzburg in the third qualifying round, now need to manage their lead to qualify for the Champions League group stage for the second year in a row, while avoiding the mistake of underestimating an internationally experienced side like Rangers. The Scots, after overcoming tough opponents such as Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen, are now called to perform a real miracle, considering they have not won away from home since last March. With nothing to lose and two goals to make up, the Scottish runners-up will push hard from the first whistle to rewrite history and return to the Champions League three years after their last appearance.
Despite several key departures this summer, the last of which was Jashari to AC Milan, Club Brugge does not seem to have been weakened. The Belgians have won three of their first four Jupiler Pro League matches, losing only the second one against Mechelen, while in the Champions League qualifiers they recorded a perfect run with three wins in three games.
Ahead of the clash with Rangers, Hayen’s men come in full of confidence with five consecutive victories. The positive run is especially evident in defense, which has kept three clean sheets in the last five matches. The Belgian runners-up, unbeaten at home in their last six matches, can also rely on the strong start of their attacking duo Vanaken and Tzolis, both with 3 goals in 8 appearances.
After finishing last season behind Celtic, Rangers have not started the new campaign in the best way. Russell Martin’s team has won only one of their last five games, with two defeats and two draws in the other four. Last weekend they collected their third league draw in as many matches, finishing 1-1 away at St. Mirren.
The Gers’ away record is a major concern heading into the trip to Bruges, as they have not won on the road in eight games (six draws and two defeats). In the previous qualifying rounds for this Champions League, the Scots lost 2-1 away to Viktoria Plzen and drew 1-1 at Panathinaikos. So far, the standout player has been new signing Djeidi Gassama, who has already scored 4 goals in 8 appearances.
In the first leg, Club Brugge showed their superiority, effectively sealing the qualification in the first half. Danilo Pereira’s goal, however, leaves a small glimmer of hope for the Scots, who must attack relentlessly from the start, risking being exposed to Brugge’s dangerous counterattacks.
With a two-goal cushion, Club Brugge have no need to start aggressively and may instead allow Rangers to dictate the play, waiting for spaces to open up in order to strike on the break. Therefore, it’s reasonable to expect both teams to find the net, even though the conditions of Vermant and Dessers remain uncertain and could influence the attacking rotations.
Supporting this scenario is the fact that Rangers have both scored and conceded in each of their last five matches, while Club Brugge has done the same in five of their last six home games.
