A week after their clash at the Red Bull Arena, Club Brugge and Red Bull Salzburg meet again to fight for a crucial slice of their season. The first leg saw the Belgians claim an away win 1-0, thanks to a late strike from Romeo Vermant in the 75th minute and a stellar performance from Simon Mignolet, by far the best player on the pitch. With that goal from their centre-forward, Club Brugge took a big step towards returning to the Champions League after reaching the Round of 16 in the previous edition. That achievement made the Belgian side one of the biggest surprises of the 2024/25 UCL, with some of their standout performers inevitably attracting interest from top European clubs: Talbi and De Cuyper moved to the Premier League, while Jashari joined AC Milan after a lengthy negotiation. Despite losing several key players, Club Brugge looked confident in the first leg, sticking to their trademark vertical style of play under coach Nicky Hayen. Red Bull Salzburg, on the other hand, will regret wasting numerous chances in that match. The Red Bulls now have to win in Bruges by at least two goals, while a narrow victory would take the tie to extra time and possibly penalties. It’s a tough challenge considering Club Brugge’s international form over the past year, but still achievable if Thomas Letsch’s men are more clinical in front of goal and show they deserve to reach the Champions League group stage for the seventh consecutive season.
Club Brugge come into this game on a high, fresh from a 2-0 league derby win over Cercle Brugge. Goals from Vanaken and Tzolis in the second half gave Nicky Hayen’s team their second consecutive win of the season (both with clean sheets), bouncing back after the 2-1 defeat to Mechelen the previous weekend.
Their record over the last five matches is strong: four wins and one loss, averaging 1.6 goals scored and 0.8 conceded per game. Looking back to the end of last season, the Belgians have lost only once in their last 10 matches in all competitions, showing solid form both home and away. In this new campaign, they’ve won both home matches so far, against Genk and Cercle Brugge.
Just days after their narrow loss to Club Brugge, the Red Bulls bounced back with a resounding 5-0 league win over Grazer AK. The star of the show was Vertessen with a brace, while Alajbegovic, Kjaergaard, and Ratkov (from the penalty spot) completed the scoring. This result leaves them on four points after two rounds, allowing them to fully focus on the away trip to Belgium.
Despite their slip-up against Club Brugge, Salzburg’s attack has averaged 2.4 goals per game in their last five outings. Defensively, they have conceded an average of 0.8 goals per match in that span, keeping clean sheets only against weaker sides Grazer AK and Dietach. In their three away matches so far, they have picked up two wins and a draw.
This clash promises to be lively and entertaining, just like the first leg. The 0-1 scoreline in favour of the Belgians could mislead those who didn’t watch the match: the Austrians had 20 shots to their opponents’ 12, but they ran into an inspired Mignolet.
In the first leg, the home side enjoyed more possession, building play mainly down the left – not by chance, the decisive cross from Meijer for Vermant’s goal came from that side. Club Brugge are not a team built to sit back, and despite holding an advantage, they are expected to continue with their quick, vertical game to seal qualification as early as possible.
The visitors, needing to overturn a one-goal deficit, will have to be more ruthless in front of goal than in the first leg if they want to turn the tie around. Their hopes of returning from Bruges with qualification in hand rest largely on Vertessen, who is crucial both in launching teammates into space and in finishing chances himself. Kitano’s condition is one to watch after he went off injured against Grazer AK.
Given the attacking nature of both teams and their European pedigree, BetMines’ prediction leans towards a match with at least three total goals and both teams finding the net. With only one goal separating them, both Club Brugge and RB Salzburg are expected to start strong, playing openly to tilt the match in their favour.
