Crystal Palace host TSG Hoffenheim at Selhurst Park in London on Thursday, November 5, in the Europa League league phase. After three matches, Palace sit 15th with four points, while Hoffenheim are 23rd with three. Neither side arrives on the back of a win: Palace lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on October 31, and Hoffenheim fell by the same score against Werder Bremen. Their European results, however, suggest this fixture could have a very different feel. Palace’s three Europa League games have produced 13 goals in total, while Hoffenheim’s have produced 10, giving both teams reason to look for a response in an important league-phase meeting.
Crystal Palace have won one, drawn one and lost three of their last five matches. Across that stretch, they have averaged 0.6 goals scored and 2.2 conceded per game. The defeat to Tottenham continued a difficult spell, but the Europa League has provided more encouragement in attack: Palace have scored eight goals in their first three league-phase fixtures.
Their European campaign began with a 4-0 home win over Lech Poznan, followed by a 3-2 loss away to Lyon and a 2-2 draw at Besiktas. Those results leave Palace with one win, one draw and one defeat, averaging 2.7 goals scored and 1.7 conceded per match in the competition. The Lech Poznan result also gives them a clear home performance to build on, and they have won two of their last three competitive games at Selhurst Park.
Yeremy Pino has scored in each of Palace’s three Europa League matches and has four goals in competitive action this season. Jorgen Strand Larsen has also scored four, although he is unavailable after a recent knock. Ismila Sarr is likewise unavailable, while defenders Chadi Riad and Takehiro Tomiyasu remain out with long-term injuries. Palace’s home games have consistently featured second-half scoring, with at least one goal after the interval in each of their last 10 home matches. Across all venues, that has happened in 21 of their last 23 games.
TSG Hoffenheim come into this trip after their 2-0 defeat at Werder Bremen. Their last five matches nevertheless include three wins, one draw and one defeat, with averages of 1.8 goals scored and 0.8 conceded. Their Europa League record has been less consistent: one victory and two defeats from three games have left them one point behind Palace.
Hoffenheim lost 2-0 away to OFI Crete and 3-2 at home to Besiktas before beating Lyon 3-0 at home on matchday three. They have averaged 1.7 goals both scored and conceded in the league phase. Adam Hlozek scored against Lyon and has two goals in his last four competitive appearances, offering one example of the attacking threat Palace will need to consider.
There are also notable trends in Hoffenheim’s away fixtures. Their last 16 away matches have each featured more than 1.5 goals in total, and a first-half goal has been scored in 19 of their last 21 away games. Across all venues, their last 14 matches have surpassed 1.5 total goals. Nathan De Cat and Albian Hajdari have long-term injuries; Vladimir Coufal, Valentin Gendrey and Bambase Conte missed Hoffenheim’s previous match because of injuries. Conte has contributed two goals and three assists this season.
The contrast between domestic form and European scoring makes this a difficult match to judge by either team’s latest 2-0 defeat alone. Palace have struggled for results recently, yet their Europa League scores so far have been 4-0, 2-3 and 2-2. Hoffenheim’s three European games have finished 0-2, 2-3 and 3-0. In each case, the teams have already played a league-phase match with at least three goals, while Palace have reached that mark in all three of theirs.
Home advantage offers Palace encouragement, particularly after their four-goal win over Lech Poznan. Hoffenheim’s recent away record is less reassuring for the visitors: they have lost five of their last six away matches, including one DFB Pokal elimination on penalties. Even so, their three wins in the last five matches show why Palace cannot treat that away sequence as a guarantee of another setback.
The scoring patterns point to opportunities at both ends without settling which side will take them. Palace’s Europa League matches have averaged more than four total goals, while Hoffenheim’s have averaged more than three. Hoffenheim’s long run of away games above 1.5 total goals adds weight to a goals-focused reading of the fixture, though the outcome remains open between teams separated by just one point in the league phase.
