On Saturday, November 15, at the Alphamega Stadium in Limassol, Cyprus hosts Austria in a crucial match that could heavily impact qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The home side has already abandoned any hope of achieving their first-ever World Cup qualification: five points behind second place with only one match left, their mission is now impossible. Nevertheless, Apostolos Mantzios' team, representing a growing football movement (as shown by Pafos’ participation in the 2025/26 Champions League), will aim to give their fans a convincing performance and perhaps a prestigious result. The situation is very different for Austria, the group’s top team, who arrive at this game with their destiny in their own hands. A win would guarantee Ralf Rangnick’s men a spot among the top two in the group, securing at least a place in the playoffs. Combined with a slip-up from Bosnia-Herzegovina against Romania, the Austrian side could even celebrate first place in the group and direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup with one game to spare.
Cyprus comes into this match with three consecutive positive results, including two draws and one win. Their last outing, on October 12, saw them comfortably defeat San Marino 0-4 away, with goals from Loizou, Kastanos, Andreou, and Kakoullis.
Although reaching even second place is now impossible, Cyprus’ qualifying campaign has been respectable: 8 points from seven matches, with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 3 losses. Mantzios’ men have shown good attacking output, scoring an average of 1.57 goals per game, while keeping a clean sheet only in the double fixture against San Marino.
At home, Cyprus has remained unbeaten in their last four matches, winning against San Marino and Lithuania, and drawing against Romania and Bosnia-Herzegovina. A key point: in all four of these games, Cyprus consistently scored two goals.
The visitors are in excellent form, having won five of their last six matches. Their only defeat came on October 12, when Rangnick’s men lost 1-0 away to Romania, keeping the Romanians in the race for 2026 World Cup qualification.
Austria, top of Group H with 15 points (5 wins, 1 loss), have shown an effective attacking unit, scoring an average of 3.17 goals per game, including 10 goals in a single match against San Marino on October 9. Defensively, they appear solid, with three clean sheets and never conceding more than one goal in the other three games.
Away from home, Austria has had mixed results: in its last four away games, it has won twice (against San Marino and Bosnia-Herzegovina) and lost twice (against Romania and Serbia). The feeling is that, as soon as the level of opposition increases, the Red and Whites struggle away from their home crowd.
Austria boasts an excellent record in head-to-head clashes with Cyprus, having won all seven official encounters. Their last win was in the first leg last September, a 1-0 victory secured by a decisive goal from Sabitzer.
According to BetMines, all indicators suggest Austria could win again comfortably: the visitors have a 60% chance of victory, while Cyprus’ probability is much lower at just 18%.
Considering the great form of Austria’s attack, led by Marko Arnautovic (who has scored 6 goals so far in the group), it is likely Austria will not only win but do so by multiple goals.
For this reason, the Over 2.5 goals outcome remains a strong option. Indeed, four of Austria’s six Group H matches have seen at least three goals, as have Cyprus’ last three World Cup qualifying games. Both teams tend to play high-scoring and exciting matches, even if for different reasons.
