The new Liga Portugal campaign brings an immediate test for Estrela Amadora, who welcome Sporting CP to Estádio José Gomes in the opening round. The two teams begin with very different expectations. Estrela are seeking a more comfortable route to survival after narrowly avoiding the relegation play-off last season, while Sporting enter the competition with the national title as their main objective. The ranking data places Estrela Amadora 17th and Sporting CP first, underlining the contrast surrounding this fixture. Even so, both sides produced encouraging results during their preparations, giving the hosts some confidence before facing a Sporting squad that completed an excellent pre-season.
Estrela Amadora secured their top-flight status in dramatic circumstances last season. A 2-2 draw away to Braga, achieved with a last-minute equaliser, allowed the club to finish 15th and avoid the relegation play-off. They ended level on points with Casa Pia but remained above them, turning the closing moments of the campaign into a decisive part of their survival effort.
The appointment of Pepa represents the principal change before the new season. Estrela had several coaches during the previous campaign, and the intention is now to establish greater stability. Their preparation offered reasons for optimism: across seven friendly matches, they recorded four wins, one draw and two defeats. The most notable result came on August 1, when Estrela defeated Al Nassr 4-2. Before that victory, they played twice on the same day, drawing 1-1 with Portimonense and beating Lusitano GC 1-0.
The latest five-match figures also indicate competitive form, with three victories, one draw and one defeat. Estrela averaged 1.8 goals scored and 1.0 conceded during that sequence. Only two of their last ten home league fixtures finished without a goal, suggesting that goalless matches have been relatively uncommon at their ground.
The squad has undergone several changes. Otávio, Paulo Moreira, Rodrigo Pinho and Jovane Cabral departed, while Stefan Leković remained and Rafa Soares, Lovro Zvonarek, Lucas Mincarelli and Beni Souza arrived. In attack, Abraham Marcus and Sydney van Hooijdonk continue to be among the team’s main hopes. Against such strong opposition, Estrela are expected to value defensive organisation while looking for opportunities to advance whenever space becomes available.
Sporting CP approach their first official appearance of the season after a flawless preparation period. They won all eight pre-season games and produced a combined scoring record of 24 goals for and only three against. Their last five matches brought five victories, with averages of 3.8 goals scored and 0.4 conceded. One of the standout results was the 4-1 success against Nottingham Forest on July 31. Sporting then defeated 1.º Dezembro 4-0 behind closed doors, having previously beaten Monaco 2-0 in the Troféu Cinco Violinos.
Those results are especially notable because the squad has been extensively renewed. Morten Hjulmand, Francisco Trincão, Hidemasa Morita and Geovany Quenda are among the players identified as departures. Sporting responded by adding Rodrigo Zalazar, Issa Doumbia, Sergi Altimira, Ibrahima Ba, Silas Andersen and Jesse Derry. Doumbia was described as the new arrival who attracted the most attention during pre-season. Maxi Araújo and Luis Suárez, meanwhile, remain with the club.
There are also absences ahead of the opening round. Ibrahima Ba, Zeno Debast, João Simões and Nuno Santos are recovering from long-term injuries, with no precise return dates provided. Nevertheless, the available results suggest that the changes have not prevented Rui Borges from establishing effective patterns within the team.
Sporting’s league statistics reinforce the strength of their position. They have scored at least once in each of their last 25 Liga Portugal matches and in their last 12 away league fixtures. They avoided defeat in 24 of their previous 25 league games and were not behind at half-time in 24 of those 25 contests. Sporting have also led at the interval in each of their last three league matches and in six of their last ten away games in the competition. In addition, their previous 21 Liga Portugal fixtures all produced at least one second-half goal.
The numbers establish Sporting CP as the stronger side entering this Liga Portugal fixture, but Estrela’s preparation means the visitors cannot treat the contest as a formality. The hosts won four of seven friendlies and closed that schedule with a 4-2 victory over Al Nassr. Their recent average of 1.8 goals per match also gives them a platform from which to challenge Sporting, particularly if they remain compact and make good use of their attacking moments.
Sporting, however, arrive with a perfect eight-match pre-season record, a powerful scoring return and several clean sheets. Their ability to score consistently away from home is especially relevant, as is their tendency to begin league matches strongly. The visitors have won at half-time in three consecutive Liga Portugal games and have rarely been behind at the break across their longer recent sequence.
The head-to-head record adds another important layer. Estrela Amadora have no wins and no draws in the last five meetings with Sporting, losing all five while averaging 0.4 goals scored and 3.0 conceded. The latest encounter ended in a 1-0 Sporting victory on April 11, 2026. That result shows that the contest does not necessarily have to become high-scoring, even though Sporting’s broader pre-season numbers demonstrate considerable attacking potential.
Estrela’s clearest challenge will be balancing resistance with ambition. Sitting too deep could invite sustained pressure from a team that scored 24 times in eight warm-up matches, but committing too many players forward may create openings for the visitors. Sporting will aim to transfer their impressive preparation into competitive action and establish control early. With the hosts targeting stability and the visitors pursuing the title, this opening-round match offers a sharp examination of both teams’ readiness for the new campaign.
