Prediction published on Aug 25, 2025 5:34 PM by Dario in Europe - Champions League | Modified on Aug 26, 2025 4:03 PM
The first ninety minutes were not enough to determine the outcome of the double clash between FC Copenhagen and Basel, both chasing a spot in the next Champions League. The first leg ended 1-1, leaving the entire qualification to be decided in the return match. The hosts are naturally considered favorites thanks to their greater international experience in recent years between the Champions League and the Conference League, as well as the advantage of playing at home. The Danish champions have had a flawless European campaign so far: in the second round they eliminated Kosovo’s Drita with an aggregate score of 3-0, while in the third they dominated Nordic rivals Malmo (0-0 in the first leg and 5-0 in the return). Despite a busy schedule, Neestrup’s men have not neglected the domestic league, sitting first after six rounds with thirteen points. With experienced players such as Lerager, Elyounoussi, and Cornelius, qualification looks well within reach for the Danish Lions. The mission is tougher for Basel who, after winning last season’s Swiss Super League, entered directly into the final playoff but failed to take advantage of their home leg. Magnin’s men, like their opponents, must win in Copenhagen if they want to return to Europe’s top competition for the first time in eight years. Even in case of failure, they would automatically qualify for the new single-league format of the upcoming Europa League, marking a European comeback after their last appearance in the 2022/23 Conference League.
Positive momentum for the Danes, who have lost only once in their last eleven games since the start of the season. After the 1-1 draw against Basel on August 20, the Lions collected another 1-1 draw against Odense in the sixth round of the Superliga. The attack is in fine form, averaging 2.5 goals in the last four matches (two wins, two draws).
FC Copenhagen are tough to beat at home: they have won or drawn nine of their last ten home fixtures. In the two matches played at Parken during the second and third qualifying rounds, Neestrup’s men defeated Drita 2-0 and Malmo 5-0—two results that bode well ahead of the clash with Basel.
After a 3-1 league defeat to Lugano, Basel regained some confidence with two positive results in a row: a 6-1 win over Biel in the Swiss Cup round of 64 and the 1-1 draw with FC Copenhagen. A clear trend in this early season is their defensive weakness: the Swiss side have conceded at least one goal in all six official matches so far.
Apart from the easy win over amateurs Biel, Basel have disappointed away from home at the start of the 2025/26 season. Magnin’s team lost twice in the Super League: 2-1 against St. Gallen and 3-1 against Lugano. One constant away from home has been both scoring and conceding in every game.
If the first leg was balanced, the return match clearly sees FC Copenhagen as favorites to win within regulation time and secure qualification for the next Champions League.
The Danes can rely on their strong home advantage, having lost only four times at Parken in 2025, one of those against Chelsea in the Conference League. Furthermore, with clean-sheet wins against Drita and Malmo, they have shown the defensive solidity needed to handle Basel, a side struggling on the road.
Another key factor is Neestrup’s side’s superior European experience, having reached the knockout stages of both the Conference League and Champions League in the last two seasons. Basel’s last European highlight remains the 2022/23 season, when they reached the semifinals of the Conference League.
