Wednesday, August 6, at the iconic De Kuip in Rotterdam, Feyenoord, led by Robin Van Persie, will host Fenerbahce, coached by José Mourinho, in one of the headline fixtures of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. The hosts finished third in last season’s Eredivisie, falling short of preseason expectations that had them as one of the favorites for the title. Their only real joy came in European competition: Van Persie’s men managed to reach the Round of 16 of the Champions League, making it through the single-group stage and eliminating AC Milan in the playoffs. The Dutch side starts this new campaign aiming to challenge PSV and Ajax for the Eredivisie title, while also hoping to qualify for the Champions League group stage for the third consecutive season. To support Van Persie—who wore the Fenerbahce shirt for two and a half seasons as a player—the club bolstered the attack with the signings of attacking midfielder Sem Steijn from Twente, right winger Gonçalo Borges from Porto, and striker Casper Tengstedt from Benfica. On the other hand, Fenerbahce begins the new season with a hunger for redemption after failing to compete with archrivals Galatasaray, who won both the Super Lig and Turkish Cup last year. José Mourinho, now in his second year in charge of the Yellow Canaries, is aiming higher. While the club has only secured Amrabat and Skriniar on permanent deals so far, they’ve also added left-back Archie Brown from Gent, right-back Nelson Semedo (formerly of Barcelona and Wolves), and Colombian striker Jhon Durán. Awaiting more reinforcements—and in the wake of Victor Osimhen’s return to Galatasaray—Mourinho’s first goal is to qualify for the Champions League group stage, which would mark Fenerbahce’s return to Europe’s top competition after a 17-year absence. Despite missing out on UCL recently, the Canaries have built solid European experience, appearing in three Europa League editions and one Conference League in the past four years.
In July, Feyenoord took part in their usual preseason friendlies, but the results left Robin Van Persie with more questions than answers. The Dutch side conceded goals to relatively modest teams like Cambuur, Gent, and Liefering, highlighting defensive concerns.
However, in their final friendly on August 2, they comfortably beat Wolfsburg 4-0, thanks to a brace by Ueda and goals from Valente and Diarra.
In last season’s Eredivisie, Feyenoord’s home record was solid: 11 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses, averaging 2.23 goals scored and 1.06 conceded per game.
At De Kuip, they also picked up some notable Champions League wins in 2024/25, including a 1-0 victory over AC Milan in the playoff round and a 3-0 win against Bayern Munich on Matchday 7 of the group stage. In 2025, they’ve won 8 of their 12 home games, losing only two and drawing just once.
Fenerbahce have had a positive preseason, playing several international friendlies from mid-July onwards in preparation for the upcoming season. Mourinho’s men have looked clinical in front of goal, scoring consistently in all outings.
Their last two friendlies included a 3-2 defeat to Benfica and a 1-0 win over Lazio, with the decisive goal scored by Irfan Can Kahveci.
Fenerbahce finished second in last season’s Turkish Super Lig and impressed away from home, with 12 wins, 4 draws, and just 2 defeats. On the road, they averaged a staggering 2.67 goals per game.
Overall, Fenerbahce have won six of their last seven away matches across all competitions.
The Feyenoord vs Fenerbahce prediction by BetMines strongly favors the visitors to come away unbeaten from De Kuip, thus gaining an important advantage ahead of the return leg.
The Turkish side has shown better preseason form and boasts a deeper, more experienced squad in European competitions than their Dutch opponents.
With José Mourinho—one of the most successful managers in European football—at the helm, and players like Skriniar, Amrabat, Fred, and En-Nesyri in the squad, Fenerbahce look well-equipped for the challenge.
According to the BetMines algorithm, there's a 70% chance that Fenerbahce will either win or draw this game (Double Chance X2). Historically, the Canaries are also unbeaten in their last three meetings with Feyenoord, with two wins and one draw.
A key trend to consider for betting tips: both teams have shown a tendency to score and concede. Feyenoord have seen both teams score in 5 of their last 7 matches, while Fenerbahce have done so in 11 of their last 13. These stats reflect two sides that are prolific going forward but shaky at the back.
