On Sunday, October 5, at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, an exciting clash of Serie A Matchday 6 will take place between Fiorentina and Roma. Two teams with ambitious goals face each other, but their approaches to the season have been very different. La Viola are still chasing their first Serie A win, having collected just three draws and two defeats in the first five matches. Stefano Pioli’s side, fresh from their Conference League victory over Sigma Olomouc, can no longer afford missteps: another negative result would further push Fiorentina away from the European spots, their declared seasonal goal, and open worrying scenarios. Roma, on the other hand, arrive in Florence as league leaders, level on points with Napoli and AC Milan, but with confidence slightly shaken after the 1-0 defeat against Lille in the Europa League. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have won all their away games so far and thus have a great opportunity to consolidate first place before the international break. A victory at the Franchi would also give the Giallorossi extra momentum ahead of their big clash with Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on October 18. This promises to be a balanced and intense match, with both sides desperate for a win: Fiorentina to finally unlock themselves, Roma to stay on top and approach the big match with confidence.
Fiorentina returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Sigma Olomouc in their Conference League opener, breaking a four-game winless streak (2 draws and 2 defeats). In Serie A, however, the Viola are struggling: in their last league outing, they were held to a 0-0 draw by newly-promoted Pisa, even risking defeat several times.
Their Serie A record remains disappointing: just 3 points in five rounds, coming from 3 draws and 2 losses. The biggest concern is their attacking department: only 3 goals scored (0.6 per game), with Moise Kean – last season’s runner-up top scorer – still yet to find the net.
Defensively, Fiorentina have improved, keeping two consecutive clean sheets across league and cup. In Serie A, though, they concede an average of 1.2 goals per match, and their home record is poor: two defeats out of two at the Franchi, losing 3-1 against Napoli and 2-1 against Como.
After three straight wins in Serie A and Europe, Roma suffered a setback, losing 1-0 at home to Lille on Europa League Matchday 2. A surreal defeat, as the Giallorossi missed three consecutive penalties with Dovbyk (twice) and Soulé, wasting a game they could have at least drawn.
Despite the European slip, Roma’s domestic campaign has been excellent so far. Gasperini’s side top the Serie A table with 12 points (4 wins and 1 defeat), level with Napoli and AC Milan. Much credit goes to their defense, the best in the league, conceding just 1 goal in 5 matches. Mile Svilar stands out as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in Serie A this season.
Their attack, however, is less convincing, with just 5 goals scored (1 per game on average). Notably, three of their four victories came by a narrow 1-0 margin, with only their last game against Hellas Verona finishing with a two-goal difference (2-0).
The Fiorentina vs Roma clash in Serie A Matchday 6 looks set to be a tactical battle, likely short on goals.
Both teams have shown offensive struggles despite creating good chances: Fiorentina are still unable to make the most of Moise Kean, while Roma are suffering from Dybala’s absence and a lack of quality alternatives on the wings.
Squad rotations are expected after their recent European matches. For Fiorentina, Gudmundsson and Piccoli are competing for a spot next to Kean in attack.
For Roma, the main doubt lies at center-forward, with Ferguson and Dovbyk battling for a starting place; El Shaarawy is slightly favored over Pellegrini in the attacking midfield line.
According to BetMines’ algorithm, the prediction leans towards a low-scoring match with under 2.5 goals. It remains difficult to imagine Fiorentina’s struggling attack breaking down the league’s best defense.
FIORENTINA (3-5-2): De Gea; Pongracic, Marì, Ranieri; Dodo, Mandragora, Nicolussi Caviglia, Fazzini, Gosens; Kean, Gudmundsson. Coach: Stefano Pioli
ROMA (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Ndicka; Rensch, Koné, Cristante, Angelino; Soulé, El Shaarawy; Dovbyk. Coach: Gian Piero Gasperini
