When a team makes a splash in an important championship like the Spanish League, the following year it often struggles to confirm itself at the same level and this is the case of Girona, for a certain part of last season, Real Madrid's first opponent for the championship victory and now eighth. The position, in itself, is not so bad but we must add the weight of the two eliminations that came in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. With this rather uncomfortable baggage, Michel's team will host on Friday night, for the advance of the next Liga matchday, an opponent that is a few points (four) and a few positions down in the standings but is in a very positive moment: Getafe, who finished in twelfth place in the last championship but after losing all of their last five games. The Madrid team, who are coming off a narrow victory against Alaves, have started 2025 very well especially with regards to the defensive phase (aside from the match with Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey). It will therefore be intriguing to understand which of the two forces will prevail: the desire for redemption of Girona who do not want to give up in a medium-profile championship or the exuberance of Getafe who are eager to continue to amaze in order to climb further positions in the standings.
They weren't necessarily asking for the passage to the Champions League Playoffs but, the final European record of 1 win and 7 losses, certainly leaves Girona disappointed and, now, the only chance of redemption is in La Liga where the team is eighth despite 10 KOs in 23 games. For Girona, moreover, the general moment in the championship is certainly not great given the 3 defeats in the last 4.
One of the few positive data that can be drawn before the next match, is that of the goals scored by Girona at home: 21 in 11 games which represent an average of almost 2 per match, certainly considerable.
3 wins and 2 draws in the last 5 La Liga games for Getafe tell us of a healthy team. If we specify that in these 5 matches there is a large victory at home to Real Sociedad and a draw against Barcelona, the partial record improves further. The seasonal tally in La Liga, however, is clearly more penalizing and sees Getafe occupying the fourteenth place, the result of 6 wins, 9 draws and 8 defeats.
Two data that certainly must be underlined, one very positive and the other very negative are also the basic ones, that is, the goals conceded (very few) and the goals scored (equally few). The goals conceded by Getafe are 17 in 23 games which are worth the second best defense in the championship but the 18 scored, also represent, in a specular way, the penultimate attack of the championship.
The two opposing data, just mentioned, relating to Getafe are too obvious to be ignored also because, on Friday night, against the Madrid team, there will be a Girona that seems rather scared, certainly not in its best moment. Overall, the value of the Catalan team seems superior but the risk is that it clashes with that of a Getafe that, regardless of the outcome of the match, can play its usual solid game. The prediction of the BetMines algorithm, therefore, even if very slightly, favors the possibility of a match with a maximum of two goals in total.
