There’s barely time for Inter to celebrate their midweek victory over Fiorentina before returning to action against Hellas Verona, who are still chasing their first win of the Serie A season. The match at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi is one of the most anticipated fixtures of Matchday 10, with crucial points on the line for both survival and the title race. The home side, despite some decent performances, sit third from bottom and risk sliding further down the table with another defeat. A victory, on the other hand, could mark a real turning point in their season, both in terms of morale and their relegation battle. Inter arrive in Verona with one clear objective: taking all three points to stay close to Napoli and Roma, the latter facing a tough challenge against AC Milan. On paper, this looks like a manageable task for Chivu’s team, provided the Romanian coach doesn’t underestimate Verona’s hunger for redemption — a side that managed to hold Juventus to a draw just a few weeks ago.
After two consecutive draws against Pisa (0-0) and Cagliari (2-2), Hellas Verona suffered a 3-1 away defeat to Como in midweek, postponing once again their first Serie A win of the season.
The Gialloblù have shown slight improvement in attack, scoring 3 goals in their last two Serie A matches compared to just 2 in the previous eight. However, their defensive solidity has dipped: they have conceded 5 goals in their last two matches against Como and Cagliari, after allowing only 4 in the previous five rounds.
Paolo Zanetti’s men currently sit in the relegation zone with only 3 points from 3 draws and 7 defeats, scoring 5 goals and conceding 14. They are among the league’s weakest sides in both attack and defense.
For this clash against Inter, Zanetti will be without injured playmakers Suslov and Kastanos, while Akpa Akpro remains doubtful. His absence would be a big blow, as he’s one of Verona’s most dynamic and physical midfielders.
In their recent midweek fixture, Inter bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Fiorentina, thanks to a brace from Calhanoglu and the first Serie A goal from Petar Sucic. This result helped the Nerazzurri move past their 3-1 defeat to Napoli just a few days earlier.
Inter’s attack remains their biggest weapon — they’ve scored in every match across all competitions so far, averaging 2.6 goals per game in their last five. Despite the three goals conceded against Napoli, the defense remains solid, having kept three clean sheets in their last four games between Serie A and the Champions League.
Thanks to the win against Fiorentina, Inter now sit close to the top spots with 18 points from 6 wins and 3 losses. They boast the best attack in the league with 22 goals scored in 10 matches (2.2 per game), though they have also conceded more goals than any other team in the top half of the table.
For the match against Hellas Verona, Chivu may have Marcus Thuram available, but the Frenchman is expected to start on the bench, with Bonny — who has scored twice in his last three league matches — likely to start alongside Lautaro Martínez. Mkhitaryan and Darmian remain sidelined.
Historically, this fixture has been dominated by Inter, who are unbeaten in their last 29 meetings against Verona, collecting 25 wins and 4 draws. Last season, the Nerazzurri won both matches — 0-5 away and 1-0 at home — averaging 3 goals per match without conceding.
Another factor leaning the prediction toward the visitors is Verona’s dreadful home form. The Gialloblù haven’t won any of their last 11 matches at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi (7 draws, 4 losses), with their last home victory dating back to February — a 1-0 win over Fiorentina.
From a betting perspective, BetMines tips the play “Both teams to score – No” (58% probability), predicting that the home side could struggle to find the net. Despite Verona’s pace up front, their forwards may find it tough against Inter’s strong and experienced backline of Akanji, Acerbi, and Bastoni.
HELLAS VERONA (3-5-2): Montipò; Nelsson, Bella-Kotchap, Valentini; Belghali, Serdar, Gagliardini, Bernede, Bradarić; Giovane, Orban. Coach: Zanetti
INTER (3-5-2): Sommer; Akanji, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Sucic, Carlos Augusto; Bonny, Martínez L. Coach: Chivu
