Just over a month after the final in Munich, where Paris Saint-Germain defeated Inter 5-0, the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League officially kicks off with the first qualifying round matches. At the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia’s Iberia 1999 face Sweden’s Malmö in the first leg of what promises to be an intriguing two-legged tie. On one side is the rising Georgian football scene, and on the other, the long-standing tradition of Swedish football. The winner of this Round of 16 clash (with the return leg set for Tuesday, July 15) will face either Levadia (Estonia) or RFS (Latvia) in the quarter-finals. The home side are aiming to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history, having won the Georgian title last season. In fact, they’ve also started the 2025 domestic season strongly, currently topping the Crystalbet Erovnuli Liga after nine matchdays. However, the recent double setback in the Georgian Super Cup has slightly dampened their momentum. Still, coach Levan Korghalidze and his men are dreaming big and will try to make the most of this first leg against Malmö, hoping to maintain their chances ahead of the return leg. As for the Swedes, their 2025 domestic campaign has not started well, and with almost half the season already played, repeating last year’s success—when they won the Swedish title for the 24th time—seems like a tough task. Nevertheless, Malmö are no strangers to European competition, having last appeared in the UEFA Champions League in the 2021/22 season. Coach Henrik Rydström will aim to lead his team to at least a draw in Tbilisi, giving them two out of three results in the second leg to reach the next round.
Iberia 1999 come into this game off the back of two consecutive defeats: a 3-1 loss to Dila Gori in the Georgian Super Cup semi-final, followed by a penalty shootout loss against Torpedo Kutaisi in the third-place playoff after a 0-0 draw in regular time.
Before those two setbacks, the Georgians had been almost unbeatable in the league, boasting a 30-match unbeaten streak (22 wins and 8 draws). Korghalidze’s side, top of the Crystalbet Erovnuli Liga, have shown consistent scoring ability, although they do tend to concede. Notably, both teams scored in six of their last eight matches.
Malmö have collected one win and two draws in their last three Allsvenskan fixtures, including a 0-0 stalemate against GAIS on Saturday, July 5. While that result may have hindered their push for European places, it confirmed the defensive solidity of Henrik Rydström’s team—they’ve kept a clean sheet in five of their last seven games.
While defensively sound, Malmö’s attack has been struggling. They’ve scored only 20 goals in 15 league matches (an average of 1.33 per game), and have failed to find the net in four of their last six matches across all competitions. Unsurprisingly, five of their last six games have featured under 3 total goals.
The Iberia 1999 vs Malmö prediction for this UEFA Champions League first qualifying round clash sees the visitors as favorites overall, but BetMines tips the Double Chance X2 rather than a straight Malmö win.
Despite their lack of international experience, Iberia 1999 remain unbeaten at home in the league (8 wins, 1 draw). Malmö, on the other hand, are winless in their last four away games (3 draws, 1 loss), and could struggle to dominate this fixture. However, avoiding defeat would still be a good result for the Swedish side ahead of the return leg.
In terms of total goals, BetMines’ Iberia 1999 vs Malmö prediction leans towards under 2.5 total goals. Malmö have scored just once in their last three away matches, while Iberia 1999 may find it difficult to break down the visitors’ strong defense.
