At the Gamla Ullevi Stadium, IFK Goteborg host Sirius in Matchday 14 of the Allsvenskan, Sweden’s top football division. The two teams approach this match in different moods but with the same urgent need for points as they chase their seasonal goals: European qualification and safety from relegation. IFK Goteborg, one of the most successful clubs in Swedish football history, need to bounce back after losing a crucial direct clash for third place against AIK Stockholm on June 29. Although they trail the third spot – which grants access to the next UEFA Conference League – by ten points, Stefan Billborn’s men still believe and know that they can’t afford any more slip-ups, starting with this match against Sirius. However, the mission could be more complicated than expected, as the White and Blues’ home performances have not always been convincing. Sirius, representing the city of Uppsala, would be safe if the league ended today, currently sitting in 11th place. Starting the season with the aim of ensuring survival as soon as possible, Andreas Engelmark’s team has moved away from the relegation zone thanks to four points collected in the last two matches. But they’re well aware the road to staying in the Allsvenskan is still long and full of challenges. Apart from Varnamo, stuck on just four points after 13 rounds, the other five teams fighting to avoid relegation – including the Dark Blues – are all within just two points of each other. This means that every point dropped could prove crucial in the battle for survival.
After three consecutive wins, Goteborg slowed their pursuit of a European place by losing 3-0 away to AIK Stockholm, who currently sit in third place. That match served as a wake-up call for Stefan Billborn’s side, especially considering that despite registering 10 total shots, they failed to hit the target even once.
Following this defeat, IFK Goteborg remain on 19 points after 13 matches, with a record of six wins, one draw, and six losses. Playing at Gamla Ullevi hasn’t provided much of an edge: in six home league matches so far, they’ve only collected two wins and a draw, averaging one goal scored and 1.17 goals conceded per match.
Sirius ended June unbeaten: in their only two games last month, they beat AIK Stockholm 3-1 and drew 2-2 away at Oster on June 28. At Visma Arena, they played a very competitive game, twice being pegged back by the opposition, with the final equalizer coming in stoppage time.
These last two positive results helped Andreas Engelmark’s side escape the relegation zone: they now have 13 points, from three wins, four draws, and six losses. Away from home, however, their struggles continue – in seven matches, they’ve managed just one win (back on March 31), three draws, and three defeats, conceding exactly two goals per game on average.
Head-to-head history between IFK Goteborg and Sirius is fairly balanced: in their last ten meetings, Goteborg have won three, Sirius two, and there have been five draws. Looking only at matches played at Gamla Ullevi, the home side have two wins, the visitors one, and two matches ended level.
These numbers suggest that this could be another tight match, despite the six-point gap between the two teams. Goteborg, however, seem to have a slight edge, thanks to home advantage and their motivation to get back into the European qualification race after last week’s setback.
There’s a strong sense that both teams will find the net at least once. Both defenses have shown weaknesses: Goteborg have conceded in each of their last three matches, while Sirius have done so in their last six.
Given the current defensive form, players like Ure, Fenger, and Walta (all with six goals in the league) will likely have chances to improve their season stats.
