After a FIFA Club World Cup campaign filled with ups and downs, Inter and River Plate are set to face off in one of the most anticipated and intriguing matches of the third and final round of the group stage. Both teams have followed identical paths in Group E so far: one win and one draw each, totaling four points. However, River Plate has scored one more goal than Inter, giving them a better goal difference and placing them at the top of the group, with Inter right behind in second. Four points, however, are not enough to guarantee qualification. Monterrey, currently third with two points, still has a realistic chance to qualify, as they face Urawa Red Diamonds—bottom of the group with zero points—in the final round. This tight group scenario forces both Inter and River Plate to aim for victory to secure first place, regardless of the Monterrey vs Urawa result. Of course, a draw could still be enough if the Mexican side loses, but it's unlikely either team will want to take that gamble and risk missing out on a spot in the Round of 16. We can therefore expect a tense and hard-fought battle, with both teams determined to top the group and earn a more favorable draw in the knockout stage.
Despite more difficulty than expected, Inter managed an important 2-1 win over Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds in their second match of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Nerazzurri fell behind after just 11 minutes to a goal by Japanese talent Watanabe but turned things around in the second half with an equalizer from Lautaro Martínez in the 78th minute and a dramatic winner by Valentín Carboni in the 92nd.
Under coach Christian Chivu, Inter is showing signs of fatigue, likely due to a heavy fixture schedule. Their defense has been particularly shaky, conceding at least one goal in each of their last three matches across all competitions. In attack, the absence of the injured Thuram has left Lautaro Martínez with most of the responsibility, and he has delivered so far, scoring in both of the first two matches.
After a comfortable 3-1 win in their tournament opener against Urawa Red Diamonds, River Plate stumbled slightly with a goalless draw against Monterrey. Despite dominating the match—recording 18 shots to Monterrey’s 3—they failed to find a breakthrough. The match ended on a sour note with Kevin Castaño sent off, leaving River with ten men in the closing stages.
Overall, however, the Millionarios are enjoying an excellent run of form, now unbeaten in 19 consecutive matches. This impressive streak has also seen them qualify for the Copa Libertadores Round of 16, scheduled for mid-July. Looking ahead to the clash against Inter, manager Marcelo Gallardo faces a midfield crisis, with three key players suspended: Kevin Castaño, Enzo Pérez, and Giuliano Galoppo.
Though both teams currently sit at the top of Group E, their recent performances have been underwhelming. Inter narrowly beat Urawa Reds, while River Plate produced a frustrating goalless draw against Monterrey, lacking cutting edge in front of goal.
With qualification on the line at Lumen Field, both teams will likely push for a win but with caution. This could result in a tight, low-scoring affair with few clear chances.
In addition, both managers are dealing with significant absences. Gallardo must reconstruct his midfield, while Chivu is without Thuram and Taremi up front, as well as key players like Dumfries and Çalhanoğlu.
For these reasons, the Inter vs River Plate prediction by BetMines suggests a match with under 2.5 total goals.
INTER (3-5-2): Sommer; Darmian, De Vrij, Carlos Augusto; Luis Henrique, Barella, Asllani, Zalewski, Dimarco; S. Esposito, L. Martínez. Coach: Christian Chivu
RIVER PLATE (4-3-3): Armani; Montiel, Martínez Quarta, Díaz, Acuña; Lanzini, Kranevitter, G. Martínez; Mastantuono, Colidio, Meza. Coach: Marcelo Gallardo
