Group E of the FIFA Club World Cup enters a decisive phase with the second round of fixtures, which could already spell elimination for some teams. At Lumen Field in Seattle, Inter take on Urawa Red Diamonds—the two sides currently at the bottom of a group that also includes Monterrey and River Plate. Inter underwhelmed in their opening match, managing only a draw against Monterrey. Chivu's men went behind to a header from former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos following a corner kick, but quickly equalised through Lautaro Martinez, also from a set piece. That result leaves Inter with no more room for mistakes—they need to win both of their remaining group stage matches, against Urawa Reds and River Plate, to reach the minimum target of qualifying for the Round of 16. While this task seems achievable for the UEFA Champions League runners-up, it’s made more difficult by the absence of Marcus Thuram due to a muscular injury, depriving Chivu of a key attacking asset. On the other hand, the Japanese side, still on zero points after a 3-1 defeat to River Plate, must win to leapfrog Inter in the standings and keep their knockout stage hopes alive. Facing a team that has reached the Champions League final twice in the last three years is, on paper, a tall order—though Inter have shown clear signs of fatigue over the past month.
It’s not the best moment for Inter, who have won just two of their last five matches across all competitions. Their 1-1 draw against Monterrey marked Chivu’s debut on the bench, and the team is still looking for its first win under his management. Prior to that, they suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat in the Champions League final at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
In addition to the players’ overall form, the defense is also under scrutiny—lacking focus during Monterrey’s goal, which came from a Sergio Ramos header on a corner.
For this upcoming clash against Urawa Red, Christian Chivu will be without Marcus Thuram. Youngster Francesco Pio Esposito is expected to start alongside Lautaro Martinez. On the right wing, Zalewski is currently ahead of new signing Luis Henrique, while in central defense De Vrij is competing with Acerbi, who is not fully fit.
Urawa Red suffered a 3-1 loss to River Plate, ending a two-game unbeaten streak in the J1 League which saw them draw 0-0 with Cerezo Osaka and win 2-1 against Yokohama FC. Their last five matches include one win, two defeats, and two draws, with an average of 1.2 goals scored and 1.6 conceded per game.
Managed by Polish coach Maciej Skorża, Urawa often play in open, high-tempo matches. In six of their last seven games, both teams have found the net, and five of those games have featured at least three total goals.
The lineup is expected to remain unchanged from the loss to River Plate. In attack, behind lone striker Matsuo—who scored against the Argentinians—will be Sekine, Matheus Savio, and Watanabe, with the latter having impressed in that match.
Despite drawing with Monterrey, Inter wasted several good chances and showed flashes of promising offensive play. Defensively, however, Chivu’s side looked vulnerable—especially on set pieces—and not at their peak physically.
As noted, the Japanese side has struggled with consistency, particularly due to an unreliable backline that has conceded in nearly every one of their last eight matches. Offensively, though, they’ve been consistent, scoring regularly since mid-April.
Since Inter are under pressure to win in order to keep their hopes of advancing alive, they’re expected to push from the opening whistle. This aggressive approach could leave space for Urawa’s counterattacks, setting the stage for an exciting, end-to-end match.
For these reasons, our Inter vs Urawa Red prediction for this Group E clash in the FIFA Club World Cup points to a high-scoring affair—with over three total goals expected.
