Internacional, hosting Vasco for Matchday 17 of the Brasileirão Betano, is aiming for a fourth consecutive league win as they continue their pursuit of a Copa Libertadores spot. Roger Machado’s side has turned things around in July, securing three straight victories—more than they managed in the previous twelve rounds. The nine points collected recently, the latest earned away at Santos, have pushed the Porto Alegre club up to 10th place in the table. If the season ended today, Internacional would qualify for the group stage of the next Copa Sudamericana. However, their main goal remains breaking into the top six, as they did last season, to secure Copa Libertadores qualification—a competition they’ve won twice (most recently in 2010). Speaking of the Libertadores, Internacional is set to face Flamengo in an exciting round-of-16 clash in August. Given the five-point gap between them and sixth-placed Bahia, nothing less than a win against Vasco will be acceptable to put pressure on their direct rivals. Vasco, on the other hand, has failed to meet preseason expectations and finds itself in the middle of a relegation battle. They're currently 16th, level on points with Santos but with a game in hand. A win in that match could lift them close to 12th place—the last spot granting access to the next Copa Sudamericana. Achieving this minimum goal would somewhat make up for their recent elimination from the same competition at the hands of Independiente del Valle (5-1 on aggregate in the playoffs). However, a turnaround seems unlikely this round, given their poor away form and Internacional’s impressive momentum.
Internacional comes off a solid 2-1 win away at Santos, with goals from Carbonero and Borré (penalty), one in each half. It was their third consecutive league win, following back-to-back 1-0 victories over Vitoria and Ceara. Over their last five league matches, they’ve recorded three wins and two losses, averaging 0.8 goals scored and one conceded per game.
Currently sitting 10th in the table, Internacional has earned 20 points from 15 matches—five wins, five draws, and five losses. Notably, 13 of those points were picked up at home, where they’ve posted four wins, one draw, and two losses. The Estádio José Pinheiro Borda remains a stronghold for the Gaúchos, who have lost just once in their last eight home matches (five wins, two draws).
On July 23rd, Vasco drew 1-1 with Independiente del Valle in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana playoffs, a result that wasn’t enough to overturn the heavy 4-0 loss from the first leg in Peru. Fernando Diniz’s side is winless in their last four matches. In their previous five across league and cup, they've registered two defeats, two draws, and just one win, averaging one goal scored and 1.8 conceded per game.
Their league position remains worrying: after 16 rounds of the Brasileirão Betano, Vasco sits 16th with 14 points, level with Santos but with one game in hand. Their away form has been particularly disappointing: just one win and five losses in league play, conceding nearly two goals per match. Across all competitions, the numbers don’t improve: in their last twelve away matches this season, Vasco has managed just one victory, along with nine defeats and two draws.
Given Internacional's strong form, the BetMines algorithm heavily favors them for the win, assigning them a 58% probability. This is largely due to their three-game winning streak, compared to Vasco's month-long winless run.
Past home meetings also back this prediction: Internacional has won seven home games against Vasco, including two of the last three. Vasco, by contrast, has managed just two wins and one draw away to Internacional.
The BetMines Internacional vs Vasco prediction also suggests a low-scoring match. Under 2.5 goals has occurred in five of Internacional’s last six home games, pointing to a defensively solid but offensively cautious team in Porto Alegre. Vasco, meanwhile, has scored more than once away from home only twice since April, and they’re unlikely to break through one of the league’s most organized defenses.
All signs point to a narrow Internacional win, possibly repeating the 1-0 scoreline of their most recent home victories.
