On Tuesday, October 21, at the Almaty Ortalyk Stadion, Kairat Almaty and Pafos will face each other in a first-ever encounter valid for Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League. This is a unique clash between two of the biggest surprises of this season’s competition. After the first two rounds, the Kazakh side sits at the bottom of the group with zero points, while the Cypriots have earned just one. This makes the upcoming game a sort of last call for both teams — a win would keep alive their hopes of finishing among the top 24 in the overall standings and securing an unexpected qualification for the Round of 32. Leaders in their respective domestic leagues, both Kairat and Pafos know they’re facing what looks, at least on paper, like one of the most manageable fixtures in their UEFA Champions League calendar. Kairat have already faced Real Madrid and will still have to meet Inter and Arsenal; Pafos, on the other hand, are coming off a heavy defeat against Bayern Munich and will soon play Chelsea and Juventus. Given such a demanding schedule and the urgent need to earn points, both teams will aim to make the most of this opportunity — to continue their European journey with confidence while also consolidating their lead in their home leagues. For this reason, a tense and hard-fought match is expected, one that will reveal much about the real European ambitions of these two debutants.
Kairat Almaty are currently in good form, coming off two consecutive league wins without conceding a goal and three victories in their last four matches across all competitions. Over their past five games, the Kazakh side has recorded three wins and two losses (both in the Champions League), averaging two goals scored and conceded per match.
After the first two rounds of the UEFA Champions League, Urazbakhtin’s men are still stuck at zero points, occupying the last spot in their group due to their poor goal difference. The Kazakh side currently holds the worst defensive record in the tournament, having conceded nine goals in their two matches against Sporting and Real Madrid. In contrast, they have scored only once, in their opening game against the Portuguese side.
In their extended European campaign, including the qualifying rounds, Kairat Almaty have registered a home record of three wins, one draw, and one loss, averaging 1.2 goals scored and one conceded per game. The positive note is that before conceding five goals to Real Madrid, they had kept a clean sheet in their previous four home matches.
Pafos are also in a strong period of form, coming off two straight league wins and having lost just one of their last seven matches in all competitions. In their most recent five fixtures, the Cypriots have collected four wins and one defeat, with an average of 2.8 goals scored and 1.6 conceded per game.
Carcedo’s team has earned just one point so far in this UEFA Champions League campaign, courtesy of a goalless draw against Olympiacos and a 1–5 defeat to Bayern Munich. The only goal scored in the group stage so far came from Mislav Orsic, one of the most experienced and talented players in the Cypriot squad.
Pafos remain unbeaten away from home this season, not only in their domestic league — where they sit top after seven rounds — but also on the international stage. Including the qualification rounds, the Cypriot side has achieved three wins and one draw in their four away matches in the Champions League, averaging one goal scored per game and conceding just one overall.
The prediction for Kairat Almaty vs Pafos slightly favors the visitors, who have been more consistent and remain unbeaten away from home so far this season.
According to the BetMines algorithm, Pafos are the favorites with a 44% chance of winning, while Kairat Almaty’s victory probability stands at 30%. Nevertheless, an even and tightly contested game is expected, as both sides desperately need three points to stay in contention for the next phase.
From a scoring perspective, the feeling is that the match could produce a few goals, but not an abundance. For this reason, BetMines tips the Under 3.5 goals option, predicting a tactical and cautious first half, likely to open up after the break and be decided by a single key moment.
