On Thursday, September 4, Wales travel to the Astana Arena to face hosts Kazakhstan in Matchday 5 of Group J of the FIFA World Cup 2026 UEFA Qualifiers. It promises to be a hard-fought clash, with crucial points at stake for both teams. After the opening rounds, Wales sit second and Kazakhstan fourth, separated by four points. Wales come into this match under pressure to win in order to defend their second place, which is vital for access to the play-offs, from Belgium who are just one point behind and expected to take all three points in their away game against bottom side Liechtenstein, who remain on zero points. Victory is the only acceptable result for Craig Bellamy’s men, especially after the 4-3 defeat in the last round of qualifiers against the Red Devils. The Dragons have everything it takes to succeed in their mission and send a clear message to North Macedonia, who currently top the group with just a one-point advantage. If Belgium live up to expectations by finishing first, the real battle will be between Wales and North Macedonia for second place, a long-distance duel that will culminate in their head-to-head clash on November 18. Kazakhstan, buoyed by their three points against Liechtenstein, are not ready to step aside and could play the role of dark horse, but only if they manage to pick up points in this must-win match. A defeat would increase the gap from the qualifying spots, and with Belgium up next on September 7, their already slim hopes of reaching the play-offs—an achievement they have never managed in their history—would vanish completely.
Kazakhstan’s only highlight so far in this campaign came on Matchday 2, when they defeated Liechtenstein 2-0 thanks to goals from Samorodov and Marochkin. In their other two qualifiers, they lost to both Wales and North Macedonia, 3-1 and 1-0 respectively.
Looking at their last five official matches, Kazakhstan have failed to score in three and have shown serious defensive weaknesses, conceding an average of 2.2 goals per game. Another worrying stat ahead of this clash with Wales: Kazakhstan have not won any of their last 11 World Cup Qualifiers played at home.
Wales have been inconsistent in Group J so far, collecting 4 points from one win, one draw and one defeat. Across their opening three fixtures, the Welsh have been clinical in attack, scoring 7 goals, but with 5 conceded (4 against Belgium), defensive adjustments are still needed.
Craig Bellamy’s side, led by the former Liverpool forward, head into this game with plenty of motivation. The 4-3 loss to Belgium on June 9 ended a 15-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, but against Kazakhstan, they should have the chance to bounce back.
In the first leg, played on March 22 in Cardiff, Wales ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from James, Davies and Matondo, in a game they dominated in possession (72% vs 28%).
The BetMines algorithm predicts Wales will once again come out on top in the return leg, relying on their superior squad quality and much stronger motivation, with real chances of securing at least second place.
For Kazakhstan, it looks unlikely their defense can withstand the pace and intensity of a Wales side packed with players from the English Premier League. All factors point to betting on the away win.
Among the players to watch, Brennan Johnson stands out: the Tottenham forward, fresh off winning the 2024/25 Europa League, has already scored 2 goals in his first 3 appearances this season.
KAZAKHSTAN (5-4-1): Seysen; Tapalov, Alip, Maliye, Kairov, Vorogovskiy; Chesnokov, Muzhikov, Orazov, Zaynutdinov; Samorodov. Coach: Ali Aliev
WALES (4-2-3-1): Darlow; Williams, Mepham, Rodon, Davies; James, Sheehan; Johnson, Wilson, Thomas; Moore. Coach: Craig Bellamy
