The second round of the 2025/26 Serie A ends with the evening clash between Lazio and Hellas Verona, two teams still looking for their first league win. The Biancocelesti were completely outplayed in their opener, losing 2-0 away to Como thanks to a brilliant performance from Nico Paz. Lazio endured a difficult summer, unable to strengthen the squad due to financial restrictions linked to liquidity index issues. As a result, Maurizio Sarri has virtually the same roster as last season, when the team finished seventh and missed out on European competitions. Their objective for this season remains the same: at least seventh place to return to Europe. Hellas Verona, as usual, aim to secure safety in Serie A, just as they did in the final rounds of last season. Their debut was encouraging: a 1-1 draw away at Udinese, a solid start to build on. Now they must show consistency, even though challenging Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico will be a tough task.
Lazio started their Serie A campaign in the worst possible way, suffering a heavy 2-0 defeat away at Como. Sarri’s men looked shaky in defense, conceding multiple chances, and equally poor in attack, rarely threatening the opposing goalkeeper.
Back at the Stadio Olimpico, Lazio will try to end a long negative run in front of their fans. Their last home league win came on February 9, when they crushed Monza 5-1. Since then, they have collected six draws and one defeat. Last season, their home record was 7 wins, 9 draws, and 3 losses, with an average of 1.73 goals scored and 1.37 conceded per match.
Hellas Verona opened their season with a 1-1 draw away at Udinese, with midfielder Suat Serdar equalizing after Kristensen’s opener. Just days earlier, they advanced in the Coppa Italia by defeating Audace Cerignola on penalties, a club that plays in Italy’s third division.
With these results, Paolo Zanetti’s side are now unbeaten in three straight away matches, including their 2-1 win at Empoli on the final day of the 2024/25 Serie A season. Last year, Verona averaged one goal scored per away game while conceding 1.58 goals on average.
After the slip-up against Como, Lazio desperately need a win to climb the table and go into the international break with more confidence. According to BetMines’ algorithm, the Biancocelesti are strong favorites thanks to their motivation and positive head-to-head record at the Olimpico.
Sarri’s men have won their last three home games against Verona, including a 2-1 victory last season thanks to goals from Castellanos and Dia. The only Verona win away at Lazio dates back to December 2020 (2-1).
The home side, still without suspended Romagnoli and winger Isaksen, must exploit their strength on the flanks. The left wing, in particular, with Tavares and Zaccagni, could be key in creating chances and troubling Verona’s defense.
For Verona, inexperience at the back could be costly, as their likely defensive trio has little Serie A experience. Their main threat could come from Brazilian talent Giovane, formerly of Corinthians, but that may not be enough to avoid Zanetti’s first defeat of the season.
LAZIO (4-3-3): Provedel; Lazzari, Gila, Provstgaard, Tavares; Guendouzi, Rovella, Dele Bashiru; Cancellieri, Castellanos, Zaccagni. Coach: Maurizio Sarri
HELLAS VERONA (3-5-2): Montipò; Unai Nunez, Nelsson, Frese; Cham, Serdar, Bernede, Niasse, Bradaric; Giovane, Sarr. Coach: Paolo Zanetti
