The 28th round of Serie A concludes with a highly anticipated clash at the Stadio Olimpico between Lazio and Udinese, two of the biggest surprises of the season. The Biancocelesti, after a major squad overhaul last summer, find themselves in fifth place, just a few points away from the top four, and among the favorites to win the UEFA Europa League. Marco Baroni’s side, for the first time under his leadership, is competing for a European spot and could secure its third consecutive victory after defeating AC Milan away last weekend and Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16. On the other hand, Udinese made headlines last summer by appointing a relatively unknown coach in Italy: Kosta Runjaic. However, a few months later, it is clear that the Pozzo family made a brilliant decision. After 27 matchdays, the Bianconeri sit comfortably in mid-table and still have an outside chance of pushing for a top-six finish. This marks a significant improvement from last season when, under Fabio Cannavaro, Udinese narrowly avoided relegation with a last-day victory against Frosinone (1-0).
Lazio heads into this Monday Night fixture on an impressive five-match unbeaten streak in Serie A, with three wins and two draws, scoring 11 goals and conceding five. Their last league defeat dates back to January 26, when they lost 1-2 to Fiorentina at home.
At the Stadio Olimpico, they have recorded seven wins, four draws, and two defeats, averaging just over two goals per game while conceding nearly 1.5 per match. Across all competitions this season, Lazio has lost only two home games.
Udinese is currently enjoying a great run of form, with three consecutive victories against Empoli, Lecce, and Parma, all without conceding a goal. Expanding the scope, Runjaic’s side has won four of their last five Serie A matches, averaging 1.8 goals scored and 0.6 conceded.
Away from home, the Bianconeri have lost just one of their last five league matches (4-1 against Como) and come into this match following a 1-1 draw at Napoli and a 0-1 win at Lecce. In 13 away games, Udinese has recorded four wins, four draws, and five defeats, scoring 15 goals and conceding 20.
Lazio, with a crucial Europa League second-leg tie against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday, will be eager to dominate early and secure victory as soon as possible. This approach would allow Marco Baroni to rest key players ahead of their European challenge.
Udinese, on the other hand, has struggled against teams that play with fast vertical transitions, as seen in their 4-1 loss to Como. Over time, they could find themselves under pressure, potentially ending their recent unbeaten streak.
Due to Lazio’s higher motivation and superior squad depth, the BetMines algorithm predicts a home win.
LAZIO (4-2-3-1): Provedel; Marusic, Romagnoli, Gila, Nuno Tavares; Guendouzi, Rovella; Isaksen, Dia, Zaccagni; Tchaouna. Coach: Baroni.
