At the Estádio Algarve in Faro, Lincoln dreams of making history as they host Braga in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League qualification playoff. The home side, 2024/25 champions of Gibraltar, reached this stage after being knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Red Star Belgrade and then eliminating Armenian side Noah in the second round. The double clash against Noah was tight until the very end, with penalties needed to decide who would advance. Juan Bezares’ team knows they start as underdogs against Braga, but they play with the freedom of having nothing to lose. Fresh off their Gibraltar Super Cup triumph, after a 3-0 win over Magpies last weekend, Lincoln will try to push beyond their limits to achieve what would be only their second-ever participation in a European competition, after the Europa Conference League in the 2021/22 season. Braga come in with a different status: a strong start to the season and a regular presence in European competitions in recent years. Their qualification path saw them edge past Drita thanks to a goal in extra time, before comfortably defeating CFR Cluj 4-1 on aggregate. With plenty of European experience, having taken part in continental competitions almost every year since 2010, Braga (fourth place in Liga Portugal 2024/25) approach this double clash as clear favorites. However, they must avoid underestimating Lincoln’s enthusiasm and determination to surprise.
Lincoln are on a three-match unbeaten run, with two draws and one win. After drawing both Europa League games against Noah and progressing on penalties, Juan Bezares’ men defeated Magpies 3-0 in the Gibraltar Super Cup final, thanks to goals from Gomez, Chipolina and De Barr.
Since their heavy 5-0 defeat against Red Star Belgrade on July 29, Lincoln have tightened up defensively, conceding just one goal in their next three matches. In terms of lineup options, the squad is at full strength. Bezares is likely to stick with a similar XI to the one that played against Noah.
Braga’s start to the season has been nearly perfect, with six matches played across the Europa League qualifiers and Liga Portugal: four wins and two draws. Their latest victory came on August 17 with a 3-0 success against Alverca in the domestic league, thanks to goals from Rodrigues, Horta and El Ouazzani.
The key strength of Carlos Vicens’ side has been their solid defense, keeping clean sheets in five of their first six matches. Meanwhile, the attack has been efficient, scoring nearly two goals per game on average. The Spanish coach has almost his entire squad available, with the exception of center-back Jonatas Noro, sidelined through injury. Up front, Pau Victor – signed from Barcelona in July for €12 million – is expected to start again.
The prediction for Lincoln vs Braga leans heavily toward the visitors, both for this match and for qualification to the 2025/26 Europa League group stage. The Portuguese side combine greater European experience with a strong early-season form, remaining unbeaten so far.
That said, the hosts will step onto the pitch aiming to give their fans another unforgettable night and to write a new chapter in Gibraltar’s football history.
However, Lincoln’s spirit and motivation might not be enough against a team built for European football, with a deeper and higher-quality squad. For this reason, the BetMines algorithm strongly leans towards an away win (prediction: 2).
