On Friday, August 15, the 2025/26 Premier League officially kicks off in the legendary setting of Anfield. Opening the season will be defending champions Liverpool and last year’s ninth-placed Bournemouth. For the Reds, this won’t be their first official match of the campaign, as they are coming off the Community Shield final lost on penalties last weekend against Crystal Palace. Liverpool have been one of the undisputed kings of the summer transfer market so far: around €300 million invested to sign Wirtz and Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt, and the day’s big returning face, Kerkez. On the departures side, Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Núñez, and Luis Díaz have left, with the latter joining Bayern Munich for €70 million. With such a strong squad, the minimum goal is to defend the Premier League title and go as far as possible in the Champions League. Bournemouth, on the other hand, start the season with more modest ambitions and a heavily reshaped squad. This summer they earned around €170 million from the sales of Huijsen, Zabarnyi, and Kerkez, which boosted the club’s finances but significantly weakened their defence. Waiting for further reinforcements, the Cherries approach this opening clash knowing they could be in for a tough defeat, but for that very reason, they are expected to play openly and hit back blow-for-blow against the hosts, knowing they have nothing to lose.
Liverpool began the season with disappointment, losing the Community Shield final to Crystal Palace on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regular time. Both of the Reds’ goals came from new signings: the first by Ekitiké, the second by Frimpong. Salah, Mac Allister, and Elliott missed their penalties, while Gakpo and Szoboszlai converted theirs.
Last season in the Premier League, which they won with a 10-point lead over Arsenal, Arne Slot’s side scored a total of 86 goals, averaging 2.3 goals per game. Defensively, they conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game, keeping 14 clean sheets. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 14 Premier League matches at Anfield and, more broadly, have lost only two of their last 20 home games across all competitions.
Ahead of their official season debut, Bournemouth took part in the Premier League Summer World in July and August, facing other top-flight English sides across the globe. After a 3-0 win over Everton, Iraola’s men suffered two defeats: 4-1 against Manchester United and 2-0 against West Ham. In their final pre-season friendly, they drew 0-0 with Spain’s Real Sociedad.
The Cherries finished last season in ninth place with 56 points, 10 away from a European qualification spot. While their attack performed decently, averaging 1.5 goals per game, defence was their real strength. In 38 matches, they conceded only 46 goals — just five more than champions Liverpool. In 2025, Bournemouth lost only two of their ten away matches, picking up four wins and four draws.
Thanks to their massive summer spending, Liverpool are not only favourites to win against Bournemouth but also strong contenders to retain their Premier League crown, even if competition remains fierce.
For this Matchday 1 clash, the Reds have the big advantage of starting at home, where they lost only once last season, averaging more than 2 goals scored and less than 1 conceded per match. Moreover, Liverpool have won all of their last five meetings with Bournemouth, keeping a clean sheet in the most recent three.
From a scoring perspective, BetMines’ algorithm expects an Over 2.5 goals match with a 57% probability. While Liverpool should have no trouble finding the net multiple times — boasting one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking lines — Bournemouth’s wingers might exploit the spaces left open by Frimpong and Kerkez, potentially creating chances to beat Alisson at least once.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Frimpong, Konaté, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitiké. Coach: Arne Slot
BOURNEMOUTH (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Araujo, Senesi, Hill, Truffert; Adams, Scott; Semenyo, Tavernier, Ouattara; Evanilson. Coach: Andoni Iraola
