On Sunday, September 21, at the Son Moix Stadium, an interesting LaLiga Matchday 5 clash takes place between Mallorca and Atletico Madrid, two teams desperately chasing points. After the first four rounds of the season, the situation already looks dramatic for the home side, who have collected only one point so far, coming from a draw and three defeats. A worrying start considering that just a few months ago, the islanders nearly qualified for Europe, finishing 10th in the league, only four points shy of eighth place. Taking into account that Mallorca has already faced two powerhouses like Barcelona and Real Madrid in the first four matchdays, Arrasate’s team cannot afford any more mistakes and will do everything possible to secure their first victory of the season and move away from the relegation zone. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, are currently underperforming: Simeone’s men sit 11th with five points, already seven behind Real Madrid and five behind Barcelona, gaps that could widen in case of another slip-up. Coming off a last-minute defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, the team has only one objective: win the next two games against Mallorca and Rayo Vallecano to enter the Madrid derby against Real Madrid on September 27 with momentum—a match that could either extinguish or reignite the Colchoneros’ hopes of fighting for LaLiga after five years. Given the points urgency shared by Mallorca and Atletico Madrid, all the ingredients are in place for an intense match, with the visitors still favorites to take all three points.
Mallorca have had a nightmare start to the season, collecting only one point in four league games. In the last round, the islanders lost 3-2 away at Espanyol, suffering their second consecutive defeat following the 2-1 loss at Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid.
The main issue is their defense: Aguirre’s side has conceded an average of 2.25 goals per game, too high to expect positive results. In attack, the performance is decent with an average of one goal per match. Vedat Muriqi is leading the offensive charge with three goals in the last two games, but unfortunately, they haven’t changed the results.
Another concern ahead of the Atletico Madrid clash is their home form. Los Bermellones have not won at home in three matches (two losses and a draw) and have collected only one point in two games at Son Moix this season: 0-3 against Barcelona and 1-1 against Celta Vigo.
It is a delicate moment for Atletico Madrid, one of the early surprises (in a negative sense) of LaLiga 2025/26. Simeone’s men have five points, coming from two draws, one defeat, and a single win in the last round against Villarreal, 2-0.
The joy of this first league win was short-lived: during the week, the Colchoneros lost their Champions League opener, 3-2 at Anfield against Liverpool. After coming back from two goals down, they conceded the decisive goal in stoppage time.
The Argentine coach must quickly fix the defense: the current average of 1.4 goals conceded per game is too high for a team aiming for major trophies.
Offensively, after some early difficulties, things are starting to click: Atletico have scored four goals in the last two matches. However, the team is still seeking their first away win of the season, having collected two losses and a draw so far in Liga and Champions League away matches.
Atletico Madrid arrive at Son Moix highly motivated to bounce back, determined to leave behind the Liverpool defeat, which occurred in a tense match that also saw Diego Simeone sent off.
Despite the loss, the Colchoneros showed character and determination: two qualities that, combined with undeniable technical superiority over Mallorca, make them the favorites.
History favors the Madrid side: in the last five head-to-head encounters with Mallorca, Atletico have won all, scoring an average of 1.6 goals per match compared to Mallorca’s 0.2. Expanding to the last ten meetings, the record shows seven wins for Atletico and three for Mallorca.
For Mallorca, the risk of a fourth defeat this season is very real. Defensive weaknesses shown in the opening rounds and reliance on Vedat Muriqi’s goals are two critical issues that, if not addressed soon, could make the season very difficult for the islanders.
