After the commanding 4-1 win in the first leg at the LNK Sporta Parks in Riga, Malmö's path to the third qualifying round of the Champions League looks increasingly straightforward. The Swedish side, buoyed by the substantial away advantage, can approach the second leg at Eleda Stadion without too much pressure on the result. Rydström’s team is in excellent form: unbeaten for two months and still firmly in the title race domestically, sitting third in the Allsvenskan. The goal is clear—returning to the Champions League group stage, a feat last achieved in the 2021/22 season. If they advance past Rigas FS, Malmö could face an exciting all-Nordic tie against FC Copenhagen in the next round. On the other hand, Rigas FS faces an almost impossible task: they must win by at least four goals in Sweden. The reigning Latvian champions have shown quality but paid dearly for their inexperience and defensive lapses in the first leg. Although they recently competed in both the 2024/25 Europa League and Conference League, the Latvian club is still chasing its first-ever qualification to the Champions League group stage. Based on the first leg, however, the technical and international gap between the two sides seems too wide to bridge in such a short time. Rigas FS will go all-in, but their European journey in this top-tier competition appears destined to end in the second round—just like last year.
Henrik Rydström’s side comes into this second-leg clash against Rigas FS in excellent shape, riding a six-match winning streak across all competitions. During this run, they’ve averaged 3 goals scored and just 1.2 conceded per match. More broadly, Malmö is unbeaten in their last ten competitive fixtures.
One of the standout performers during this positive spell is Otto Rosengren, who has scored in each of his last three appearances, cementing his status as one of the squad’s most decisive players.
Home form is another major asset for the Swedes: Malmö is unbeaten in their last six matches at Eleda Stadion, with three straight home wins—all of which saw them score at least three goals. Most recently, they beat FC Iberia Tbilisi 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.
Following their defeat in Sweden, Rigas FS bounced back impressively by consolidating second place in the Virslīga with a resounding 6-2 victory over Tukums 2000 on Matchday 24. That loss to Malmö remains their only defeat in the past month, during which they had previously put together an impressive eight-game winning streak.
The undisputed star of the team is striker Darko Lemajić, who has already scored 21 goals this season and remains a crucial focal point in Morozs’ attacking plans.
Rigas has also performed well on the road, with five straight away wins. Their defensive solidity away from home is noteworthy: they've kept four clean sheets in those five matches and conceded only once.
Thanks to their dominant first-leg result and strong European pedigree, Malmö enters this second leg as the clear favorite. According to BetMines' algorithm, the home side has a 49% win probability, compared to 27% for the visitors—highlighting the clear gap shown in the first meeting.
The Swedish side boasts solid international experience, having recently competed in both the Champions League and Europa League. This matters not just in terms of mentality, but also in squad building—designed to handle the rigors of European competition.
Conversely, Rigas FS has struggled away from home in Europe, losing all four of their away games during the opening stages of the 2024/25 Europa League—even against sides like Dynamo Kyiv and Maccabi Tel Aviv, who were not unbeatable on paper. Given this background, it seems likely that the Latvians will have to wait a bit longer for their Champions League breakthrough.
Nonetheless, BetMines anticipates an open game, with both teams looking to score. An Over 2.5 goals outcome seems highly likely, having occurred in five of Malmö’s last six games and in each of Rigas FS’ last three. Both sides, despite their different styles, prefer attacking football over defensive caution.
