If there is a representation of what can be defined, in a long and prestigious tournament like the Champions League, an early final, the match on Tuesday at the Etihad between Manchester City and Real Madrid (who will still see the second round on February 19 at the Santiago Bernabeu) is the best possible. Citizens and Blancos have never met in the final in these years of splendor and, at the starting line of this season, as in many others in the past, they were the two teams most likely to win the cup and were also the last two to lift the trophy: Real Madrid in 2024, Manchester City in 2023. However, some decidedly unforeseen hitches prevented both from finishing in the top eight and, indeed, for Manchester City almost finishing in the top 24 and now, the draw has mockingly but also enthusiastically given us this play-off which, inevitably, will steal the scene from all the other seven games on the program because the certainty is that, prematurely, one of the favorites on the eve will be eliminated.
Guardiola's predictable and dense turnover in the FA CUP match against Leyton Orient risked costing him dearly, but Manchester City overturned the initial disadvantage, winning 1-2 thanks to goals from Khusanov and De Bruyne.
The Citizens' record in the last 11 official matches is therefore 7 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats, more than decent, if it weren't for the fact that the 2 defeats were really heavy (9 goals conceded between Arsenal and PSG).
With the possibility of winning the Premier League once again, abandoned for some time and which now sees the Citizens in fifth place at -15 from Liverpool, even in the Champions League, Manchester City took a big risk, finishing in 22nd place, after 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats. Always in the Champions League, however, Guardiola's team has won 15 of the last 18 matches played at home.
The single point collected in the last two league games, slows down the Blancos slightly, who however remain at the top of the Liga and remain more than solid considering that in the last 16 matches, they have lost only 2. The recent victory in the Copa del Rey at Leganes was the fifth in the last 6 away games for Real Madrid who, in that case, showed that they can win even without Kylian Mbappé who, however, with goals is actually dragging the team along (9 goals in 2025 and already 20 this season).
In the Champions League, for now Real Madrid has not had half measures: 5 wins and 3 defeats in the 8 matches played.
Real Madrid's last two "non-victories" in the league give Manchester City more confidence for this home game, also seeing the record of Guardiola's team at the Etihad which, however, remains respectable. In total, in the last 5 clashes between the two teams, the balance is equal (3 draws and 1 win each) but, based on the ninety minutes and the matches played in Manchester, Real Madrid has never managed to win. Even in the context of an open contest, therefore, BetMines gives confidence to the English by assigning a home prediction to this first leg.
