On Wednesday, June 18th, at Lincoln Financial Field Stadium in Philadelphia, Manchester City and Wydad Casablanca will face off in the opening match of Group G at the FIFA Club World Cup. The two teams arrive at the tournament with very different motivations: the English side, coming off a disappointing season, are looking to bounce back and aim for the title, while the Moroccan team are hoping to make a name for themselves on the world stage, although their chances of advancing to the next round are slim. Group G also includes Juventus, who are expected to compete with Manchester City for the top spot, as well as Al-Ain from the UAE. After finishing third in the Premier League and being eliminated by Real Madrid in the Round of 16 of the Champions League, Guardiola’s squad is determined to turn the page and start a new winning cycle. The club’s board has already been active in the June mini transfer window, securing top reinforcements to build a team capable of challenging both domestically and internationally. The Citizens signed Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan, French attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon, and Algerian left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, who stood out last season at Wolverhampton. However, Manchester City also said goodbye to one of its biggest icons: Kevin De Bruyne, who joined Napoli on a free transfer after ten years at the club. Other players like Jack Grealish (not selected for this Club World Cup) are also reportedly on their way out. Wydad Casablanca also come into this tournament after a lackluster season. Under coach Benhachem, they finished third in the Moroccan league and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Excellence Cup. Despite being one of Morocco’s most successful clubs—with three CAF Champions League titles and twenty-two domestic championships—the gap in quality between them and Manchester City is considerable, making an upset extremely unlikely. Even though the 2024/25 campaign was not memorable, it’s worth noting that Manchester City have won, among other trophies, two Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Club World Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup over the past three seasons.
Manchester City ended the season on a strong note, losing just one of their last thirteen matches across all competitions. On the final day of the Premier League, they secured a 2-0 win over Fulham (goals by Gündoğan and Haaland), earning qualification for the 2025/26 Champions League and finishing third in the league with 71 points, behind Liverpool and Arsenal.
Although some numbers, especially those of Haaland, dipped compared to previous seasons, City still had the second-best attack in the Premier League, scoring 72 goals in 38 matches—second only to Arne Slot’s Liverpool. Defensively, after a rough patch between late 2024 and early 2025, they regained solidity towards the end of the campaign, finishing with 44 goals conceded (1.16 per game), just three more than league leaders Liverpool.
Wydad Casablanca are coming off a 2-0 loss to Union Touarga, which resulted in their elimination from the Excellence Cup at the quarter-final stage. Their last match in the Moroccan top flight, Botola Pro, took place on May 11th, when they beat Renaissance Zemamra 2-0, securing third place in the league and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Coach Amine Benhachem’s side lost just once in their last sixteen league games, finishing with 54 points thanks to 14 wins, 12 draws, and only 4 losses. Offensively, Wydad were one of the more productive teams with 45 goals scored. However, defensively they struggled, conceding more goals than any other team in the top part of the table.
Despite a below-par 2024/25 season, Manchester City are overwhelming favorites to win their Club World Cup opener. The competition was already theirs in the 2023/24 season, albeit in a different format.
Pep Guardiola is expected to give immediate playing time to the new signings: Reijnders in midfield alongside Rodri, Cherki in the attacking midfield role behind Haaland, and Ait-Nouri forming a dangerous left-sided partnership with Marmoush. These additions significantly boost the squad’s technical quality, which already includes elite players like Foden, Doku, and Bernardo Silva, among others.
Wydad Casablanca not only lack the technical depth of their opponents but are also coming off a run of four matches in which they’ve conceded in every game. The expectation is that Manchester City won’t just win—they’ll aim to do so by a wide margin, which could prove important for goal difference in the event of a tie with Juventus, the other main contender for the top of Group G.
For these reasons, the Manchester City vs Wydad Casablanca prediction leans heavily toward a match with at least three total goals (Over 2.5 goals). It’s also likely that all goals will come from the English side, with the Moroccans failing to score (No Goal).
