After both drawing their opening match of the 2025/26 Danish Superliga, Midtjylland and Sonderjyske will be aiming for their first win of the season as they face off on Monday, July 28, at the MCH Arena in Herning. The hosts are still reeling from last season’s disappointment, when they missed out on the Danish championship by just one point, finishing second behind FC Copenhagen. This new campaign didn’t start on the right foot either, with Thomas Thomasberg’s side only managing a home draw against newly promoted Odense in their league opener. Now it’s time to bounce back and secure a crucial first victory to keep pace with the title contenders. This clash with Sonderjyske comes in the middle of a two-legged Europa League second qualifying round tie against Scottish side Hibernian. Following a 1-1 draw in the home leg, everything is still up for grabs, and some squad rotation is expected, both in the starting eleven and during the match. Nonetheless, the Wolves will take the field aiming for nothing less than a win. Sonderjyske enter this season with the clear goal of survival, a target they comfortably achieved last year with a solid cushion above the relegation zone. However, their start has also been less than ideal, having drawn 1-1 at home with fellow newly promoted side Aarhus. Head coach Thomas Norgaard’s mission is to maintain a safe distance from the bottom two spots by limiting damage against top teams and collecting points in direct relegation battles. As such, this match against Midtjylland falls into the first category, and a single point from Herning would be a golden result for the visitors.
Midtjylland have opened their 2025/26 campaign with two consecutive draws: a thrilling 3-3 against Odense in the league and a 1-1 against Hibernian in the first leg of the Europa League qualifiers. Including the end of last season, Thomasberg’s men are now unbeaten in their last seven matches, with 4 wins and 3 draws.
In the 2024/25 Danish Superliga, Midtjylland finished second with 62 points, the result of 19 wins, 5 draws, and 8 losses. Their main strength was clearly their attacking output, boasting the league’s best offense with 64 goals – an exact average of two per game. At home, they have not lost in six matches across all competitions (4 wins, 2 draws), and had an almost flawless home record last season with 14 wins and just 2 losses.
Sonderjyske also began the 2025/26 Superliga with a draw: 1-1 at home against newly promoted Aarhus. After conceding just one minute into the game, it was 17-year-old striker Hyseni who equalized in the 53rd minute. This result continues a positive run for the Høstene, who have only lost once in their last eight competitive matches.
Norgaard’s side finished last season in a relatively safe 9th place with 37 points (10 wins, 7 draws, 15 losses). While their attack did its part with 47 total goals, their defense was one of the league’s worst, conceding 64 (again, two per game on average). Away from home, their performance wasn’t disastrous: 5 wins (mostly in the closing weeks of the season), 2 draws, and 9 losses.
The Midtjylland vs Sonderjyske prediction from BetMines sees the home side as heavy favorites to secure their first three points of the season, handing Sonderjyske their first defeat of the campaign.
Thomasberg’s squad is deeper and of higher quality, and they also benefit from playing at home, where they suffered only two league defeats last season. Expect Midtjylland to start the game aggressively in order to build a lead early, potentially allowing them to rest key players in the second half ahead of their crucial trip to Scotland for the Europa League return leg.
As for Sonderjyske, while they did win three of their last four away matches, these victories came during the Relegation Playoffs against weaker opponents.
Another strong betting angle is that both teams are likely to score. Midtjylland’s last six matches have ended with both teams finding the net, as have six of the last seven for Sonderjyske. Not to mention the last four head-to-head meetings between these two sides have all seen both teams score.
MIDTJYLLAND (4-4-2): Lossi; Mbabu, Lee, M. B. Sorensen, Jensen; Osorio, O. Sorensen, Bravo, Simsir; Dju, Buksa. Coach: Thomas Thomasberg
SONDERJYSKE (3-4-1-2): Flo; Soulas, M. Jensen, Gretarsson; Klysner, Oggesen, Sommer, Duru; Lyng; Agger, Hyseni. Coach: Thomas Norgaard
