On Friday, February 28, Monaco and Reims will battle for a crucial portion of their season in the opening match of Ligue 1 Matchday 24. At Stade Louis II, two teams with desperate needs for a positive result will go head-to-head, fighting for their respective season objectives: a Champions League spot for Monaco and survival for Reims. Monaco, currently fifth in Ligue 1 with 40 points, is the clear favorite based on recent performances. However, the team comes into this match after two devastating disappointments: elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Benfica and a painful 2-1 defeat against Lille, which cost them third place in the standings. With Nice, Lille, and Marseille in excellent form and Lyon showing signs of resurgence, Monaco knows they cannot afford further missteps if they hope to secure a European qualification. Their first step to getting back on track is defeating Reims, who sit in 17th place, just three points clear of the relegation zone. For manager Diawara, whose arrival has not sparked the desired turnaround, this is a make-or-break moment. A failure to react now could push Reims into even deeper trouble.
Monaco’s recent form has been inconsistent, with three wins and two losses in their last five Ligue 1 games, averaging 3.2 goals scored and 2.2 conceded per match. Their latest defeat, a 2-1 loss to Lille, marked their seventh league defeat—though only two of those have come at home.
With 28 goals scored at home, Monaco is the second-highest-scoring home team in Ligue 1, behind PSG. A key player to watch is Mika Biereth, who arrived in January from Sturm Graz and has already netted seven goals in his first six Ligue 1 appearances.
Reims comes into this match fresh off a French Cup victory over Angers, but their Ligue 1 form has been dreadful. They have picked up just one point in their last five league matches, a surprising 1-1 draw against PSG on January 25. Their attack is struggling significantly, having failed to score in their last three Ligue 1 games.
Excluding the French Cup, Reims has not won an away match since November 10. Since then, they have recorded two draws and three defeats, scoring only two goals while conceding nine in their last five away league games. The team’s survival hopes rest heavily on Keito Nakamura, their top scorer with nine goals this season.
Monaco and Reims have already met twice this season, both ending in draws (1-1 in the French Cup and 0-0 in Ligue 1). However, this time, Monaco cannot afford to drop more points in the race for European qualification and will look to capitalize on home advantage.
Given Reims’ poor away record, they will be a tricky but manageable opponent for Monaco. BetMines’ algorithm prediction for Monaco vs Reims suggests a strong probability of a home win.
