After setting aside club duties for a couple of weeks, the Netherlands and Poland face off in one of the most intriguing clashes of Matchday 5 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Both teams, along with Finland, Lithuania, and Malta, are part of Group G. At the moment, the Netherlands sit second with 6 points, while Poland are third, also with 6 points. However, the standings are still open, as the Dutch have played only two matches compared to Poland’s three. Finland, currently top with 7 points, have already played four games. On paper, the Netherlands are the clear favorites to top the group and secure direct qualification to the World Cup in the United States. Ronald Koeman commands a squad full of talent, with players competing in top leagues like the Premier League. From Van Dijk to Reijnders, Gakpo to Xavi Simons, the list of stars is long, and Dutch fans hope this generation can finally bring home another trophy to pair with the 1988 European Championship title. At De Kuip in Rotterdam, Poland arrive fully aware they cannot afford more slip-ups after their costly defeat to Finland in June. Jan Urban’s men had set a minimum goal of finishing second in the group to fight for qualification through the playoffs. But with Finland shaping up as a dangerous outsider and already holding one of the head-to-heads, Poland’s chances are at risk. Once again, they will rely heavily on their veteran leaders, especially Robert Lewandowski, to challenge Depay and company. But with another crucial match against Finland coming up on Sunday, September 7, Poland could see their qualification hopes decided in just a few days.
In recent months, the Netherlands have proven to be one of the most competitive teams in Europe and beyond. In March, Koeman’s side pushed Spain all the way in the Nations League quarterfinals, only losing on penalties after drawing both legs.
Because of their Nations League schedule, the Netherlands only began their 2026 World Cup Qualifying campaign in June. They started strong, beating Finland 2-0 and thrashing Malta 8-0. With two wins from two, they sit second in the group, just one point behind Finland, who have played two games more.
Depay and his teammates come into this clash unbeaten in their last six matches, recording three wins and three draws. At home, they are also unbeaten in their last six, with four wins and two draws, averaging 3.67 goals scored and just 1 conceded per game.
Poland began their qualifying campaign well, defeating Lithuania 1-0 and Malta 2-0. However, their third match ended in disappointment, losing 2-1 away to Finland, which allowed Jacob Friis’ men to take control of the group.
Lewandowski and company also come off a disastrous UEFA Nations League campaign, where they were relegated to League B after finishing last in Group 1 with just 4 points from six games (1 win, 1 draw, 4 defeats). In response, the Polish FA appointed Jan Urban as head coach on July 16.
One of Urban’s key challenges will be improving Poland’s away form. They have won just once in their last four trips (a 3-2 win in Scotland), while losing the other three against Croatia, Portugal, and Finland. A turnaround is needed quickly if they want to secure at least second place in the group.
Based on recent performances and clear technical superiority, the Netherlands are heavy favorites to beat Poland and reach 9 points after three matches.
Koeman’s team also benefit from the home advantage, playing in one of the most intimidating stadiums in the Netherlands, De Kuip, usually home to Feyenoord. This factor pushes BetMines’ algorithm toward a strong home win prediction, with a 70% probability.
Tactically, expect the Netherlands to dominate possession, using Xavi Simons and Gakpo on the wings and exploiting central runs from De Jong and Reijnders.
Poland, on the other hand, will likely defend deep with a five-man backline. While this setup may limit the damage, it risks isolating Lewandowski and Piatek up front, reducing their attacking threat.
For this reason, the Netherlands vs Poland prediction from BetMines points toward a low-scoring match, with fewer than four goals scored overall, as has been the case in five of the last six meetings between these two nations.
NETHERLANDS (4-3-3): Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Dijk, Van Hecke, Van de Ven; De Jong, Gravenberch, Reijnders; Simons, Depay, Gakpo. Coach: Ronald Koeman
POLAND (3-5-2): Skorupski; Bednarek, Kedziora, Kiwior; Cash, Zielinski, Szymanski, Slisz, Zalewski; Lewandowski, Piatek. Coach: Jan Urban
