On Friday, August 8th, at the Max-Morlock-Stadion, Nuremberg hosts Darmstadt in the second fixture of Matchday 2 in the 2. Bundesliga. The hosts, led by former German international Miroslav Klose, are entering their seventh consecutive season in Germany’s second division, all of which have ended in the lower half of the table. It's not surprising, then, that they started the season with a loss—albeit an unlucky one—away at Elversberg, last year’s third-placed side. Based on their recent performances, Nuremberg's goal is to stay around mid-table, avoiding too many slip-ups that could drag them into the relegation zone. To help solidify the backline, they signed experienced center-back Luka Lochoshvili from Cremonese, aiming to make their defense more reliable. Darmstadt, on the other hand, started the campaign strongly with a 4-1 win over Bochum. After a disappointing 12th-place finish last season, missing out on promotion contention, Florian Kohfeldt’s squad is under pressure to bounce back and rejoin the fight for a top spot. Securing another win here would be key to building early momentum and sending a clear message to the rest of the league.
Nuremberg kicked off the new season on the wrong foot, losing 1-0 away to Elversberg on Matchday 1. Klose’s side was left frustrated as the hosts grabbed the winning goal in the 90th minute, following an evenly matched contest in terms of both possession and chances.
It's not a great moment for the team overall, considering they’ve now lost four matches in a row, including three pre-season friendlies.
Last season, Nuremberg showed promise in attack, averaging 1.8 goals per game. However, defensive issues were clear, conceding 1.7 goals per match on average and keeping only 8 clean sheets across 34 league games. This is a side that creates plenty going forward but also allows too much at the back. One of the standout performers still with the squad is attacking midfielder Julian Justvan, who scored 8 goals across all competitions last season.
Darmstadt got off to a flying start in the new season, crushing Bochum 4-1 on opening day thanks to a hat-trick from Lidberg and a goal from Vukotic. During their five pre-season friendlies in July, Florian Kohfeldt’s men picked up four wins and suffered just one loss (to Hoffenheim), scoring an impressive 4.4 goals per game while conceding just one per match.
In last season’s 2. Bundesliga campaign, Darmstadt struggled defensively, managing just 4 clean sheets in 34 matches. Offensively, their stats were similar to Nuremberg’s, averaging 1.6 goals per game. They did, however, register slightly more shots on target: 5.4 per game compared to Nuremberg’s 5. Last season's top scorer was Isac Lidberg, who netted 15 goals and has already hit the ground running this season with a hat-trick against Bochum.
The Nuremberg vs Darmstadt prediction from BetMines leans toward a very balanced match, though the visitors are slightly favored to either win or come away with a draw.
Nuremberg have lost eight of their last nine home games and six of their last seven matches overall, both home and away. Darmstadt, in contrast, come into this game with strong momentum, having won five of their last six.
Darmstadt also have the upper hand in recent head-to-head meetings, remaining unbeaten in three of their last four encounters with Nuremberg.
As for total goals, the BetMines algorithm expects an exciting match, predicting at least three goals. Over 2.5 goals has occurred in nine of Nuremberg’s last ten competitive matches and in five of Darmstadt’s last six.
