The 10th round of Ligue 1 brings an exciting midweek clash as Olympique de Marseille host Angers SCO at the iconic Stade Vélodrome on Wednesday night. After a strong run of five consecutive league victories that briefly placed them at the top of the table, Marseille suffered a setback last weekend with a 2-1 defeat away to Lens. That loss dropped Roberto De Zerbi’s men to third place, and they will be eager to bounce back in front of their home fans. Angers, meanwhile, finally ended a long winless streak by defeating Lorient 2-0, a result that lifted them out of the relegation zone. However, facing Marseille away from home is a completely different challenge.
Olympique Marseille have been one of the most consistent sides in France this season. Their record of six wins and three defeats in Ligue 1 reflects a team capable of dominating most opponents, especially at home. The Phocéens have scored an average of 2.4 goals per match while conceding just 1.0, and they have won their last nine home games in all competitions. Even more impressively, they have not lost at half-time in their last 17 matches, showing remarkable stability from the opening whistle.
Despite their recent defeat to Lens and a Champions League loss to Sporting CP, Marseille’s attacking power remains intact. Mason Greenwood has been in sensational form, netting seven goals so far, while Igor Paixao has added four in his last five appearances. The duo will once again lead the offensive charge at the Vélodrome. Coach Roberto De Zerbi will, however, have to cope with several absences: Facundo Medina, Geoffrey Kondogbia, and Amine Gouiri are all sidelined, while Hamed Junior Traoré remains doubtful. Defensive leaders Benjamin Pavard and Emerson Palmieri will be under scrutiny after some shaky performances in recent outings.
Marseille’s home dominance is undeniable. They have scored in each of their last 20 home matches and have seen over 0.5 goals in the second half in 18 of their last 20 at the Vélodrome. The team’s attacking rhythm, combined with their ability to control games early, makes them heavy favorites to secure another three points.
Angers SCO finally found relief last weekend with a convincing 2-0 win over Lorient, ending a seven-match winless run. That victory lifted them to 15th place in the Ligue 1 standings, providing a much-needed confidence boost. Their overall record this season stands at two wins, three draws, and four defeats, with an average of 0.7 goals scored and 1.3 conceded per match. Despite their struggles, the clean sheet against Lorient was a positive sign for coach Alexandre Dujeux.
Angers’ away form, however, remains a major concern. They have conceded in most of their recent trips and have seen over 0.5 goals scored in the second half of their last 10 away games. The team’s attack has often lacked consistency, with Jim Allevinah still unavailable and doubts surrounding Marius Louër, Emmanuel Biumla, and Prosper Peter—the latter having picked up an injury shortly after scoring against Lorient. On a brighter note, new signing Amine Sbaï has made an immediate impact with an assist, while 18-year-old forward Sidiki Chérif has scored in each of his last two league appearances, emerging as a promising talent for the visitors.
Historically, Angers have struggled against Marseille. In their last five head-to-head meetings, they have lost four and drawn one, conceding an average of 0.8 goals per game while allowing Marseille to score nearly three per match. Their last encounter ended in a 2-0 defeat in February 2025, and given the current form of both sides, a similar outcome would not be surprising.
This fixture looks set to be a one-sided affair on paper, but Angers’ recent morale boost could make it more competitive than expected. Marseille’s attacking trio, led by Greenwood, will aim to exploit the defensive gaps of an Angers side that often struggles away from home. The hosts’ pressing intensity and quick transitions under De Zerbi have been key to their success, especially at the Vélodrome, where they have scored multiple goals in most of their recent matches.
Angers will likely adopt a compact defensive setup, hoping to frustrate Marseille and hit on the counter through Chérif’s pace. However, maintaining that discipline for 90 minutes against one of the league’s most potent attacks will be a tall order. With Marseille averaging three goals per game in their last five outings and Angers conceding nearly two per match, the probability of a high-scoring contest is significant.
Given the context, Marseille’s superior form, and their home advantage, the Phocéens are expected to dominate possession and create numerous chances. A strong reaction after two consecutive defeats in all competitions is anticipated, and the Vélodrome crowd will demand nothing less than a convincing performance.
