At the Orange Vélodrome, on Friday, September 12, the opening fixture of Ligue 1 Matchday 4 will take place between Olympique Marseille and Lorient, two teams in need of valuable points to pursue their seasonal goals: a European spot for the hosts and survival for the visitors. Both sides lost in the league before the international break: OM fell 1-0 in the Olympico Derby against Lyon, while Lorient collapsed 7-1 at home under Lille’s firepower. The record is identical after three rounds: one win and two defeats for a total of 3 points. For Marseille, this tally is below expectations: the seasonal objective, unless Paris Saint-Germain collapses, remains securing the second place achieved last year. For this reason, Aubameyang and teammates cannot afford anything less than a win, also to build confidence ahead of their much-anticipated Champions League debut against Real Madrid next Tuesday. Lorient, on the other hand, knows that getting a result at the Vélodrome will be a feat: in the last nine years, the Bretons have always lost at this stadium, often by clear margins. Olivier Pantaloni’s men, back in Ligue 1 with survival as their primary target, will try to contain Marseille’s attacking quality and hit on the counter, though it will hardly be enough. Still, the three points collected so far represent a useful base to build their fight for safety. More than the final result, what matters will be showing they have overcome the shock of conceding seven goals against Lille, in order to face the rest of the season with optimism.
Before the international break, Olympique Marseille lost the Olympico Derby against Lyon 1-0, punished by a Pavel Sulc goal in the 87th minute. It should be noted, however, that Roberto De Zerbi’s side played with ten men from the 28th minute after Egan-Riley was sent off for a last-man foul.
This wasn’t their only defeat in this Ligue 1 start: Marseille also lost their opener against Rennes, bouncing back in the following match against newly promoted Paris FC. OM currently has 3 points, sitting 10th in the table, with an average of 1.67 goals scored and 1.33 conceded per game.
Marseille can rely on an excellent home record, having won all their last five Ligue 1 matches at the Orange Vélodrome. More generally, they have lost just once in their last thirteen games in front of their passionate supporters, whose atmosphere is famous not only in France but across Europe.
In their last match before the international break, Lorient suffered a heavy 7-1 home defeat against Lille, exposing all the defensive flaws of a team struggling with the step up in competition. For the Bretons, this was the second-heaviest loss in their history, after the 8-2 defeat to Stade Reims in the 1976/77 Coupe de France quarterfinals.
Lorient currently sits 15th with 3 points, coming from their only win in the first three rounds: a convincing 4-0 against Rennes. The 7-1 against Lille confirmed their defensive issues: they own the league’s worst defense, with 2.67 goals conceded per match on average. Their attack, however, has shown some strength, averaging 1.67 goals per game.
Despite coming off a promotion season to Ligue 1, Lorient’s away record has rarely been convincing. On Matchday 1 they lost 1-0 away at Auxerre, mirroring their Ligue 2 campaign finale, when they were beaten 2-1 by Ajaccio in their last away game.
The prediction for Olympique Marseille vs Lorient is heavily in favor of the home side, eager to bounce back from their defeat against Lyon and desperate for three points to stay in touch with the top spots.
Head-to-head stats favor De Zerbi’s men: the last ten meetings ended with nine OM wins and one draw. The last clash, on May 12, 2024, saw Marseille win 3-1 thanks to an Aubameyang brace — he is again a candidate to be a key figure in this Friday’s matchup.
Tactically, Marseille is expected to dominate possession from the start, exploiting the pace and creativity of their wingers Traoré and Greenwood to threaten Kamara’s goal. It’s also likely De Zerbi will aim to close the game early in order to rest some starters ahead of the midweek Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
The visitors will try to resist Marseille’s pressure as long as possible, relying on counter-attacks to create danger. However, it won’t be easy against a defense recently reinforced in the transfer market with the signing of Benjamin Pavard, former Bayern Munich and Inter defender.
