On Wednesday, November 19, the Rommel Fernández Stadium will host the match between Panama and El Salvador, valid for the 6th and final round of Group A in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers. With just ninety minutes left in the group stage, the hosts are still fully in the race for first place, the only spot that guarantees direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Panama currently sit second but level with Suriname, who lead only thanks to a better goal difference. For this reason, the home side must first do their job by beating El Salvador and then wait for favorable news from the other match in the group, Suriname vs Guatemala. The situation is very different for El Salvador, bottom of the group and never truly competitive for one of the top two spots. Despite being out of contention for some time, La Selecta will still try to end their disappointing qualifying campaign with a proud performance, aiming to soften the final outcome.
Panama come into this match as the second-strongest side in Group A, having collected 9 points (2 wins, 3 draws) in their first five games of the World Cup Qualifiers. Still unbeaten, Thomas Christiansen’s men are coming off an important 3–2 away win against Guatemala, thanks to a brace from Waterman and a late winning goal by Fajardo.
The Panamanian national team can rely on solid defensive organization, which has allowed them to concede just under one goal per match on average (0.8) and keep two clean sheets so far. Los Canaleros score regularly, though not prolifically, as shown by their average of 1.2 goals per game in their five previous Group A fixtures.
Panama, unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches across all competitions, have not been particularly convincing at home. In fact, they have not won any of their two home games in Group A so far, drawing both 1–1, against Guatemala and Suriname.
El Salvador no longer have anything to play for in their World Cup Qualifying journey, sitting bottom of Group A with just 3 points, coming from their only win in the opening match against Guatemala. Since that day, they have suffered four consecutive defeats, the latest on November 13: a 4–0 loss away to Suriname, the current group leaders.
In Group A of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, the team coached by Hernan Gomez have shown significant limitations both in attack and defense, scoring just 2 goals in five matches while conceding 8. Their attacking situation is particularly worrying: they have failed to score in their last three games against Panama (first leg), Guatemala, and Suriname.
La Selecta have delivered contrasting performances in their two away matches of this group. Gomez’s men started well with a 0–1 victory in Guatemala, but their most recent trip ended in a heavy 4–0 defeat to Suriname.
In the first five Group A matches, Panama have shown they possess all the qualities needed to secure qualification for the next World Cup, building their results more on defensive solidity than on attacking brilliance.
From a tactical standpoint, the hosts will be expected to control the game in search of three points that could prove decisive in the race for first place. Considering that El Salvador have nothing left to fight for, being mathematically out of qualification contention, Panama are clear favorites.
According to BetMines, a home win (1) has a 60% probability. The algorithm also offers the tip “at least one team not to score,” predicting that the visitors may fail to find the net for the fourth straight match.
Both tips are supported by recent history: the home win has occurred in eight of the last ten encounters between these nations played in Panama, while the “at least one team not to score” option has landed in six of the last eight matches by El Salvador.
