It’s a clash within the clash on Thursday, August 21, at the Spiros Louis Olympic Stadium, between the Greek giants Panathinaikos and the rising Turkish side Samsunspor. With their tradition as one of the most successful clubs in Greek football, the home side will try to use all their experience to win this two-legged tie and secure a place in the upcoming Europa League. After all, Rui Vitória’s team also made an impact in Europe last season, reaching the Round of 16 in the Conference League. The start of the season hasn’t been ideal for Panathinaikos, who began their European campaign in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers but were immediately eliminated by Rangers. The Athenians bounced back strongly in the Europa League third qualifying round, eliminating Shakhtar Donetsk on penalties, a team considered among the favorites to go far. As for the Turks, this is their first qualification match, having finished third in last season’s Super Lig ahead of stronger squads like Beşiktaş. This achievement boosted the confidence of Thomas Reis’ side, who are now dreaming big after winning their first two league matches, aiming for their first-ever historic participation in a European competition. While the Turks may lack international experience, they definitely bring more enthusiasm than the Greeks — something that could be decisive across 180 minutes.
Panathinaikos are coming off three consecutive draws across all competitions, the latest being last Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League third qualifying round against Shakhtar Donetsk. After two 0-0 draws, the Greeks secured qualification with a 4-3 win on penalties.
What stands out from the two matches against Shakhtar is that they didn’t concede a single goal against an attack that had recently impressed against Ilves and Beşiktaş. However, Panathinaikos have not won in their last three home matches and could be without Filip Djuricic, one of their most talented players, due to injury. Up front, there is the usual battle between Swiderski and Ioannidis for the striker position.
Samsunspor started well in the Super Lig, winning their first two games: 2-1 against Genclerbirligi and 0-1 away at Kocaelispor. Thanks to these victories, Thomas Reis’ men are among the early leaders at the top of the table, alongside the likes of Galatasaray and Trabzonspor.
The Turkish side, unbeaten in their last three away matches (2 wins, 1 draw), arrive at this crucial fixture possibly without attacking midfielder Afonso Sousa, signed from Lech Poznan, and certainly without right winger Anthony Musaba. In midfield, Antoine Makombou, recently signed from Serie A side Cagliari, could make his international debut.
Panathinaikos are not in great form, with just one win in their last eight matches including friendlies. In the current season, they have yet to secure a victory, recording one defeat and three draws. The biggest concern, however, is their attack, which has scored just once so far — and that goal came from Djuricic, who will miss this match due to injury.
The Turks, on the other hand, began with two wins, but both were narrow, scoring only one goal in their only away match. These are two teams not known for their attacking power but rather for their defensive organization.
For this reason, the BetMines algorithm predicts a tight and cautious match where tension and fear of mistakes could outweigh entertainment. The expectation is a low-scoring game, with fewer than three goals in total.
PANATHINAIKOS (4-3-3): Dragowski; Kotsiras, Palmer-Brown, Touba, Kyriakopoulos; Maksimovic, Cerin, Chirivella; Teté, Swiderski, Pellistri. Coach: Rui Vitória
