The Betano Clausura Tournament heats up: on Tuesday, September 2, at the Ciudad de Vicente López in Buenos Aires, Platense will host Godoy Cruz in the Matchday 7 clash of Group B of Argentina’s top football league. Platense reached a historic milestone on June 1, winning the Argentine Championship for the first time after defeating Huracán in the Torneo Apertura final. Just a few months after that unforgettable night, the Calamares are deep into the Clausura Tournament: currently, they occupy 10th place but have played only five matches, one or two fewer than the teams above them. This means that with a few more consecutive positive results, Kily González’s side could quickly climb the standings and theoretically get within a few points of the leaders Vélez Sarsfield. The first hurdle on the road for the Argentine champions appears, on paper, to be one of the more manageable. Godoy Cruz arrives in Buenos Aires at the bottom of Group B with only 3 points, coming from three draws and three losses in the first six matches. Still hunting for their first win in the Clausura, Ribonetto’s men were recently eliminated from the Copa Sudamericana by Atlético Mineiro and need to reverse their fortunes after three consecutive league defeats, the latest being a 2-0 home loss to Vélez. With the end of the midweek double fixture, Godoy Cruz can now focus all their energy on the league, aiming to escape the bottom of the table and attempt a comeback towards 8th place, currently five points away.
In the last league round, played on August 16, Platense achieved their fourth consecutive positive result by beating San Lorenzo 2-1 thanks to a brace from Paraguayan striker Ronaldo Martínez. With this victory, their first in the Betano Clausura, the Calamares rose to 10th place with 6 points, just two points shy of 8th place, which grants access to the playoffs.
Platense remains a tough team, especially at home: since September 2024, they have lost only once at Ciudad de Vicente López, showing solid defensive organization that allows them to concede very few goals in front of their fans. So far in the Clausura, in the three home games played, the brown-and-white side has collected one win and two draws, scoring 2 goals and conceding just 1.
August was a month to forget for Godoy Cruz: Ribonetto’s team lost all five matches played between the league and Copa Sudamericana, conceding a total of 11 goals while scoring only 4. Even more worrying ahead of the Platense clash is their offensive drought over the last two games, both ending without a goal against Atlético Mineiro in the cup and Vélez Sarsfield in the league.
It is no surprise, then, to find the white-and-blues at the bottom after the first six rounds, with only 3 points. The season is still long, and nothing is lost: to start a comeback that currently seems complicated, a decisive step up is needed both in attack and defense (the second-worst in the tournament).
Given the home team’s good form and the visitors’ negative trend, the Platense vs Godoy Cruz prediction strongly favors the home side. Cristian González’s team has a 48% chance of taking all three points, compared to just 20% for their opponents.
Beyond the victory, Platense could take advantage of Godoy Cruz’s offensive struggles to keep a clean sheet. This would not be a novelty: in two of the last three home games, the Calamares finished 0-0. For this reason, BetMines’ algorithm predicts that at least one of the two teams will fail to score, with a concrete risk that it will be Ribonetto’s men who remain goalless.
Tactically, in the early rounds of the Clausura, the visitors tried to rely on possession but failed to turn it into real goal-scoring opportunities. Platense, on the other hand, has shown a more direct style, based on long passes, and a higher number of duels won compared to their opponents, confirming their superior physicality, especially in midfield.
PLATENSE (4-2-3-1): Desábato; Saborido, Vazquez, Salomon, Lozano; Portillo, Baldassarra; Mainero, Martinez, Zapiola; Lotti. Coach: Kily Gonzalez
GODOY CRUZ (4-3-3): Petroli; Arce, Mendoza, Escobar, Moran; Gonzalez, Poggi, P. Fernandez; Altamira, Auzmendi, Andino. Coach: Walter Ribonetto
