On Thursday, September 18, at the Jan Breydel Stadium, the intriguing clash of the UEFA Champions League Matchday 1 takes place between Club Brugge and AS Monaco, two teams aiming to be potential surprises of the competition. The hosts were one of the revelations of last season, reaching the Round of 16. To earn another chance on the international stage, Club Brugge had to play the playoffs, successfully eliminating first Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and then Scottish side Rangers without major issues. Despite a not-so-brilliant start in the domestic league—also due to the double weekly commitments—and a squad weakened over the summer with some key departures, Nicky Hayen’s team has what it takes to match last year’s European campaign. AS Monaco, on the other hand, enters the Champions League for the second consecutive season, thanks to a third-place finish in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Marseille. The Monegasques, who started their domestic campaign strongly, aim to qualify from the group stage, just as they did last year before being knocked out in the playoff against Benfica. With giants such as Real Madrid, Manchester City, Juventus, and Tottenham in the group, picking up points in Belgium will be crucial—even if it won’t be easy at all.
Club Brugge started September in the worst possible way, losing 1-0 in the Jupiler Pro League Matchday 7 against RAAL La Louvière. For the Belgians, it was their second setback in a row, following the 1-1 draw away at Gent on August 31. They haven’t won since the 6-0 thrashing of Rangers in the second leg of the Champions League playoff on August 27.
In their last five matches between league and Champions League playoffs, Hayen’s men have collected three wins, one draw, and one loss, with an average of 2.2 goals scored and 0.6 conceded per game. These numbers highlight a very prolific attack combined with a solid and well-balanced defense.
The Blue and Blacks have not lost at home in seven matches, recording six wins and one draw. Narrowing the focus to the Champions League, home advantage has often been decisive, with only one loss in their last seven home fixtures in this competition.
AS Monaco are enjoying a good moment of form, having won three of their first four Ligue 1 matches. Last weekend, the Monegasques defeated Auxerre 2-1 away, with goals from Minamino and Ilenikhena, climbing to third place in the standings with 9 points, three behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
In this start of the season, Adi Hütter’s side has shown strong attacking output, scoring an average of 2 goals per match. The defense still needs some adjustments, as they have conceded more than one goal per game on average (1.25). Overall, however, they remain a physically strong and well-organized team.
The away form of the Red and Whites has been inconsistent in recent times, making it difficult to predict how they will perform in Belgium. To illustrate their unpredictability, in their last ten away matches they recorded three wins, three draws, and four defeats.
The prediction for Club Brugge vs AS Monaco on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League leans toward the hosts, who can rely on home advantage and greater international experience gained in recent years.
Hayen’s side plays an intense and proactive brand of football, but also carefully constructed to avoid exposing their defense to counterattacks. The feeling is that the first part of the game could be very balanced, but over time the superior technical quality of Brugge’s attacking midfielders may be enough to tilt the result in their favor.
As for Monaco, coach Hütter has often stated his desire to entertain fans, therefore favoring an offensive and proactive approach.
Since Brugge are likely to dominate possession, it will be hard for Monaco to build dangerous chances. Instead, their defensive weaknesses—already visible at the start of the season—may come to light, opening the door for the Belgian side to claim victory.
To make things even more difficult for Monaco at the Jan Breydel Stadium, possible absences include goalkeeper Hrádecký and experienced playmaker Golovin. For the hosts, striker Vermant’s fitness remains in doubt; if unavailable, German forward Tresoldi is ready to step in.
CLUB BRUGGE (4-2-3-1): Mignolet; Sabbe, Spileers, Mechele, B. Meijer; Audoor, Stankovic; C. Forbs, Vanaken, Tzolis; Tresoldi. Coach: Nicky Hayen
AS MONACO (4-2-3-1): Kohn; Teze, Dier, Salisu, Ouattara; Zakaria, Camara; Akliouche, Biereth, Minamino; Balogun. Coach: Adi Hütter
