Matchday 2 of the Scottish Premiership wraps up with an intriguing clash between Dundee United and Hearts, two sides that have both started the new season on a positive note. The hosts are fighting on two fronts: the UEFA Europa Conference League and the domestic league. In Europe, their campaign has been satisfactory so far: a double 1-0 win over Strassen in the second qualifying round, followed by a 2-2 draw away at Rapid Vienna in the first leg of the third round. In their Scottish Premiership opener, Goodwin’s men secured another 2-2 draw away to newly promoted Falkirk. While not the most exciting result, it was partly understandable given the busy fixture list. Speaking of possible distractions, Dundee United could face a similar challenge in this second league match, as on Thursday, 14 August they will have the tricky return leg against Rapid Vienna. Hearts, on the other hand, have enjoyed a flying start, winning all their matches so far in both cup and league competitions. After progressing to the League Cup knockout stage with maximum points, McInnes’ men earned their first three league points with a 2-0 victory over a tough Aberdeen side. Riding the momentum from recent wins and taking advantage of Dundee United’s potential European distraction, Hearts have a strong chance of securing another victory, laying the groundwork for a rewarding season.
Dundee United are enjoying a solid start to the season, remaining unbeaten in all official matches so far. After dispatching Strassen with a 2-0 aggregate in the Conference League second qualifying round, they recorded back-to-back 2-2 away draws – against Falkirk in the league and Rapid Vienna in Europe.
In these early outings, Goodwin’s side have averaged 1.5 goals scored and 1 conceded per match, keeping two clean sheets. These are better numbers than last season, which they ended with an average of 1.2 goals scored and 1.4 conceded per match (12 clean sheets).
Among the standout players so far are forwards Max Watters and Zachary Sapsford, who have each scored 2 goals in 4 appearances.
Hearts are in excellent form, having won all five of their official matches at the start of the 2025/26 season. McInnes’ men topped their League Cup group stage with 12 points from 4 games and kicked off their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Aberdeen, the recent Scottish Cup winners.
Hearts have shown remarkable attacking efficiency, scoring an average of 3.6 goals per game in their last five official matches. Defensively, they remain one of the strongest units, conceding just one goal in those same five games – and none in the last four.
With so many goals scored early in the season, several players are drawing attention, including Lawrence Shankland and Claudio Braga, both of whom have already scored 3 goals.
The clash between Dundee United and Hearts is expected to be competitive and balanced, with both teams still unbeaten so far. According to the BetMines algorithm, however, the visitors have a higher probability of taking all three points, which would mark their sixth consecutive win.
Recent head-to-head history favours Hearts: in the last ten meetings against Dundee United, they have recorded six wins, two draws and two defeats. Narrowing the focus to games at Tannadice Park, they have won three of the last five, including a 0-1 victory last January.
Given the form of both sides, this could be a high-scoring affair. Dundee United tend to find the net regularly at home and are coming off two consecutive matches with four total goals, while five of Hearts’ last six matches have featured at least three goals.
