After winning the first two rounds of the league, Barcelona have the chance to head into the international break with maximum points when they visit Rayo Vallecano in the Sunday night fixture on August 31, valid for Matchday 3 of the 2025/26 LaLiga season. The Blaugrana started the campaign by confirming their role as strong title contenders, defending the crown they snatched from Real Madrid last year, and their opening results have been in line with expectations. Despite some defensive issues emerging away at Valencia against Levante, Hansi Flick’s side are once again proving to be a goal-scoring machine, led by the flair of Lamine Yamal and the class of Pedri. On the transfer market, due to the club’s financial situation, signings have been limited: the most notable being Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United and goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol. The positive side, however, is that the former Bayern Munich coach can still rely on the same squad that last year won LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup, in addition to reaching the Champions League semifinals. Rayo Vallecano, on the other hand, come into this clash after finishing last season in an excellent eighth place, which, thanks to their playoff win over Neman, earned them a spot in the UEFA Conference League. Íñigo Pérez’s side have picked up three points in the first two matchdays, beating Girona but losing away to Athletic Bilbao, a notoriously tough ground. Facing Barcelona is always a high-risk encounter, but Rayo will try to throw everything they have at it, resisting the Blaugrana’s attacks and hitting on the counter to surprise Flick’s men. However, the fatigue accumulated in their midweek Conference League match could make an already difficult challenge nearly impossible.
On Thursday, August 28, Rayo Vallecano secured their Conference League qualification by beating Neman 4-0 at home after already winning 0-1 away in the first leg. In their last LaLiga match, Íñigo Pérez’s men lost 1-0 away to Athletic Bilbao, while they had opened the season with a 3-1 home win over Girona.
The Red Stripes have shown solid home form in 2025, losing only two of their twelve matches at the Estadio de Vallecas, with five wins and five draws. The standout player so far is left winger Álvaro García, who has already scored 4 goals in his first 4 appearances this season.
Barcelona have picked up right where they left off last season, winning their first two LaLiga matches: 3-0 away at Mallorca in the opener and 3-2 last weekend away to Levante. Among the standout performers, besides the usual Pedri and Lamine Yamal, is Ferran Torres, who has scored in both games so far.
Hansi Flick’s team, who won LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup in his debut season at the Catalan club, have not lost an away league game since November 10 last year: a 2-1 defeat against Real Sociedad. Last season, away from home, they collected 14 wins, 3 draws, and only 2 losses, averaging 2.63 goals scored and 1 conceded per game.
Both Rayo Vallecano and Barcelona started the 2025/26 season positively and want to enter the international break on a high, which suggests an intense and hard-fought match. That said, according to the prediction for Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona, the visitors remain strong favorites for the win despite the defensive concerns that emerged against Levante.
As for the number of goals, the BetMines algorithm points toward a game with fewer than three total goals. In fact, the last nine head-to-heads between these two sides all ended with under four goals. Last season, Barcelona won 2-1 at the Estadio de Vallecas thanks to goals from Pedri and Dani Olmo, overturning an early strike from Unai López.

BARCELONA (4-3-3): Joan García; Eric García, Araújo, Cubarsí, Balde; De Jong, Pedri, Dani Olmo; Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, Raphinha. Coach: Hansi Flick
