On Saturday, August 9, at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, the third fixture of Matchday 2 in the Scottish Premiership features Rangers vs Dundee, with both teams chasing their first league win of the season. The hosts began their campaign with a slight misstep, drawing the opener against Motherwell, but quickly bounced back in Europe, comfortably defeating Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of the Champions League third qualifying round. With a strong advantage heading into the return leg, the Gers can now focus entirely on the Dundee clash, with a clear goal of securing their first three points and staying close to the top pack. It’s a task well within reach for Russell Martin's men. Martin was appointed in June with the mission to return Rangers to the top of the table, five years after their last Scottish title. On the other side, the opposition is a modest Dundee side that narrowly escaped relegation to the Championship last season. Managed by Steven Pressley, Dundee already lost their opening game to Hibernian and haven’t done much to improve their squad, mainly relying on free agents and loan signings. Despite what seems like a classic mission impossible, the Dark Blues will give their all to take even a single point from Ibrox, hoping to break a streak of over 24 years without a win at the home of Rangers.
Rangers have had a solid start to the 2025/26 season, registering two wins and two draws in their first four official matches. Most recently, on August 5, they claimed a convincing 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League qualifiers. Once again, it was new signing Djeidi Gassama who made the difference, having already scored 4 goals in his first 3 appearances—quickly becoming a fan favourite.
Early signs show that Russell Martin’s side is well-organised defensively, particularly at home, keeping clean sheets in both home fixtures so far (against Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen). Offensively, they’ve been consistent as well, averaging 1.75 goals per match overall, and 2.5 goals across the two matches played at Ibrox.
Dundee’s league start has been disappointing: a 2-1 home loss to Hibernian in a match dominated by the visitors. Their only goal came from Finlay Robertson, courtesy of the team’s only shot on target in 90 minutes. This followed their elimination from the opening round of the Scottish League Cup in July.
Across both the League Cup and Scottish Premiership, Dundee have played five matches, winning two and losing three. The Dark Blues have averaged 1.8 goals per game, although this stat is somewhat inflated by weaker cup opposition, while conceding an average of one goal per match. Their top scorers so far are striker Simon Murray and defender Clark Robertson, with 2 goals each.
Following the draw in their league opener against Motherwell, Rangers cannot afford any more slip-ups. They now face a match that, on paper, should be straightforward, against a Dundee side that finished 34 points behind them last season and remains technically inferior.
The BetMines prediction algorithm is clear: the home side are strong favourites with a 58% win probability, compared to 21% for both a draw and an away win.
Russell Martin's men can rely on their home advantage: at Ibrox, Rangers have won their last four home games and are unbeaten in their last six across all competitions. History is also on their side—Dundee haven’t won in Glasgow since 2001 and have lost each of their last 20 away encounters with Rangers.
The algorithm also suggests an Under 3.5 goals outcome with a 59% probability. This trend is supported by the numbers: this result has occurred in four of Rangers' last five matches and in four of Dundee’s last five away games. A home win is expected, though likely by a moderate margin.
It’s also worth noting that Rangers face a trip to Plzen next Wednesday. Despite their 3-goal cushion, Martin will need to manage both the physical and mental load of his squad, possibly influencing team selection and strategy for this league fixture.
