At the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Real Madrid and Al-Hilal make their debut in the new format of the FIFA Club World Cup. Placed in Group H alongside Red Bull Salzburg and Pachuca, the two sides face off in a match that could already shape the outcome of the group. Real Madrid comes into the competition after a turbulent season filled with ups and downs: a second-place finish in La Liga and a quarterfinal exit from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Arsenal. Results deemed unsatisfactory by the club’s management, who decided to end the Carlo Ancelotti era. After years of success, the Italian coach left the bench to become Brazil’s head coach. His replacement is Xabi Alonso, following two excellent seasons at Bayer Leverkusen, tasked with reviving an ambitious technical project. To support the new manager, the club acted quickly in the summer transfer window. Young Spanish defender Dean Huijsen joined from Bournemouth, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who signed on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool. In a tournament that Real Madrid has already won five times, most recently in 2023, the minimum goal is to top the group and begin their knockout journey with confidence. Key figures include Kylian Mbappé, expected to lead the team from the start, and Luka Modrić, ready to give his final contribution in a white shirt before his announced departure after the competition. Al-Hilal also comes into this debut with a new manager. Following a third-place league finish and elimination in the AFC Champions League semifinals, the Saudi club sacked Jorge Jesus and appointed Simone Inzaghi. The Italian coach, fresh from four seasons at Inter Milan, inherits a competitive squad with strong international presence. Despite the strength of their opponents, the Saudi side is aiming to secure at least second place in the group to advance, confident in their ability to compete with anyone. The tournament opener immediately presents a clash between two ambitious, transitional teams, with Real Madrid as favorites but warned not to underestimate an Al-Hilal side that could emerge as one of the surprises of the competition.
Real Madrid ended their season with three consecutive wins, rebounding from a heavy 4-3 defeat to Barcelona on May 11, a result that effectively handed the title to the Catalan side. That loss to Hansi Flick’s team was their only setback in their final eight matches across all competitions, with six wins and one draw rounding out the campaign.
They finished second in La Liga with 84 points, four behind champions Barcelona. Offensively, the team thrived under the leadership of unstoppable Kylian Mbappé, who topped the league’s scoring charts with 31 goals. Real netted 78 goals in total, averaging just over two per match. However, defensively, the team struggled at times: 38 goals conceded—an average of one per game—highlighted the injuries that plagued their backline, especially during the middle and latter stages of the season.
Al-Hilal enters this clash with just one loss in their last ten competitive fixtures, recording six wins and three draws during that stretch. Despite their solid form, the Saudi side ended the season trophyless. They finished second in the Saudi Pro League, eight points behind Al-Ittihad, led by stars like Kanté and Benzema, and were knocked out of the AFC Champions League by domestic rivals Al Ahli SC.
Offensively, Al-Hilal showcased their firepower, finishing with the league’s best attack: 95 goals in 34 rounds, an average of 2.8 goals per game. Defensively, however, they showed clear vulnerabilities, conceding more goals than any other side in the league’s top five.
The clash between Real Madrid and Al-Hilal is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining and high-scoring fixtures of the Club World Cup group stage. The two sides have met before in this competition: in the 2022/23 final, Los Blancos came out on top in a thrilling 5-3 victory.
Though they hail from vastly different footballing cultures, both Real Madrid and Al-Hilal adopt an attacking philosophy focused on flair and speed, emphasizing the technical ability of their forwards. Fans can therefore expect a match full of chances and goals at both ends.
Xabi Alonso, in his debut as Real Madrid head coach, faces a familiar defensive crisis. As a result, he is likely to start with an untested central pairing of Asensio and Huijsen—an arrangement that may lead to defensive lapses and expose the team to Al-Hilal’s counterattacks.
Simone Inzaghi, for his part, seems inclined to maintain the 4-2-3-1 setup used by his predecessor. However, the Saudi league statistics highlight ongoing defensive fragility, and it seems likely that Bounou, despite his quality, will be picking the ball out of his net more than once.
Given the technical talent on both sides and their shared offensive mindset, the prediction for Real Madrid vs Al-Hilal leans toward a goal-filled match with both teams on the scoresheet.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Asencio, Huijsen, Garcia; Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinicius, Mbappe. Coach: Xabi Alonso.
AL-HILAL (3-5-2): Bono; Tambakti, Koulibaly, Al-Bulayhi; Cancelo, Kanno, Neves, Milinkovic-Savic, S. Al-Dawsari; Malcolm, Mitrovic. Coach: Simone Inzaghi.
